I was into Prince since Dirty Mind, when I listened to a friend's cassette walkman while he was jamming to it in High School. So I bought the vinyl Dirty Mind and then Controversy LPs, enjoying the perfect blend of punk/new wave/funk - the genres that I mostly listened to at the time.

Then the 1999 LP came out. The first time that I heard Little Red Corvette was a turning point, or a no-going-back point for me concerning Prince. It was the perfect song. It was everything I could ever want in my auditory color palette.

I heard a story of a Johnny Cougar(his name back then) concert where Mellencamp came out during his set and played Little Red Corvette from a boom-box into the PA. He had a need to bring the song to the attention of as many people as possible. At his own damn concert. The song is that good. A classic. A masterpiece.

Don't get me started on the 12" Dance Mix.

I heard/read about this to. He wanted Prince to do co-lead vocals on Pink Houses, but I think Prince declined.

The quote in bold is on the Anniversary Edition of PR for the Premire party they interview JCM and he states that he blaired the song at one of his concerts cause he liked it so much. He never did want Prince to co lead vocals with him. He only played it on his boom box at the concert confused
Smurf theme song-seriously how many fucking "La Las" can u fit into a dam song wall

The song that made me a fan.

MTV used to run this and "1999" a lot back in the day and I remember thinking "who is THIS dude?" There was something really captivating about the music because even though it reminded me of some other artists, and was obviously borrowing styles from a lot of different sources (Sly, Rick James, Jimi, MJ), it still didn't SOUND like anyone else. It was like someone took all influences from every band I liked (which wasn't many at the time since I was only 15) and blended them into something entirely unique. When i found out the whole record was written and recorded by ONE guy, I had to check it out.

I bought the album and remain consistently amazed by it to this day. I still think it's the quintessential Prince record. It shows off everything he can do, is remarkably consistent, and will still catch you by surprise with the little things it does to break up and decorate the fundamental, basic rhythms that drive every song. There's a LOT of hidden little sounds and really basic instruments (like a triangle or tambourine or even a single synth note) that will only show up for one measure or so, but season the song perfectly.

When the worst track on an album is "Delerious", that's a pretty good record. I know this is the LRC appreciation thread, but I love this record and I've always loved this song.

25 years later and still nothing sounds like it.

Didn't he also used to cover "When You Were Mine?"

probably the best use of metaphor in a pop song

EVER

its that good

Lady Cab Driver

Thieves in the Temple?

Then there's the line in 'When Doves Cry', "Don't make me chase you, even doves have pride."

I will say it's the best pop 'car' song.

Signed, what a fantastic and timeless song!

What was it about Prince retiring it from live performances? Did that actually happen?

dag, i used to think the song was overrated. always knew it was gr8 but wasn't one of my faves. the ext'd 12 made it a "destination song" where i put it on JUST for that purpose. the way the bass comes in near the end of the mayday portion in FON-KAY!

This song is simply the most perfect pop song ever. I perform this song to the best of my abilites, as close to the album as possible, all the way to the orgasmic end. Let me tell you, when i sing this song it makes people jump up and down like I'm Elvis or something. The song is simply magic and was the very one that made me want to be a musician. Usually, when I perform this, because of how it builds up and up, people first start looking curiously then they start to gather around, by the end of the song I have them in the palm of my hand. I said it before and say it now, it's purely me standing on the shoulders of a genius.

Pulled up along side one at a light today, rolled down the window and cranked up LRC. The guy fell out laughing.
