Is Prince's version of I'll Never B Another Fool as powerful as Chaka's? This has to be one of my all time favourite Chaka Khan songs - her vocal delivery is just plain nasty!
I've heard that a version with Prince on vocals is doing the rounds... is it any good?

Also, does he sing the line "I'll never open my legs again"???

yes he does He also sings the rest of the line "...to a man who's insecure." I think when Prince writes specifically for other people, he sings the demo like it's intended without changing words or gender references. In his version of "I Hear Your Voice", he sings the line "I even bought a new dress, but when I put it on...". Not that Prince ain't never worn a dress before. -- [Edited 12/24/08 8:44am] "I Was FINE Back in the Day!"

But to answer your question, I don't think Prince's version is as powerful. P's version sounds like he's just laying down a demo and kinda going through the motions. "I Was FINE Back in the Day!"

and all honesty, though this was funny, it's not the same song...

no man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Yes, and it's very disturbing to me. I don't listen to that song much. [Edited 12/25/08 21:02pm] Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Lemme hear some love for this track... how great is Chaka's vocals on this?

The way she sings this verse always gives me goosebumps:
This love you need to fade Leave the best to yesterday If this only one thing is true I ain't gonna be another fool

I think they're just different. Prince doesn't just lay down a guide. He gives it some aggression, like 'Never!' about 2.44. He wrote it, giving an interpretation of how it sounds in his head.
I prefer Prince singing this song although Chaka's is impressive. I don't think twice about gender swapping of the lyrics. They're just a vehicle for the melody (and thats a Bull for the rodeo-like performance).

That is one of the most staggeringly stupid, ignorant things I've heard anyone say anywhere in quite some time. You should be ashamed for saying something so intolerant and idiotic. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Prince didn't write "I'll Never B Another Fool". This is one of the songs Prince stole from Sandra St Victor. See also "Soul Sanctuary". And "Living 2 Die". © Bart Van Hemelen

How did he steal "Soul Sanctuary"? Sandra was given writing credit. Sandra came to Prince with a bunch of demos in the hope they'd collaborate. Of course, Prince being his usual ass self, decided to redo the songs overnight, so by the time SSV came back the next day or so, she was confronted with these new versions. That's Prince's idea of collaboration, which SSV didn't agree with, so she left disappointed. Next thing, those songs start appearing on albums, often with incorrect/incomplete credits. Oh, and Prince never asked for permission, of course. © Bart Van Hemelen
