I heard that Prince preferred Betamax to VHS and was raging when he had to replace his Betamax cause had taped The Godfather off the telly, but it was on betamax and it just wasn't cool to be still using betamax after say '88

Coincidentally, the decline of his popularity generally coincides with the decline of betamax

well if he did then he was RIGHT! we used to have a beta and it was awesome! the tapes were smaller and the machine was faster...when you pushed the play button...low and behold the GD thing would play...not got errr, click click errr...then play like the lame O VHS did!

Beta was higher quality.....but still.

Betamax to VHS is a little like BluRay to HDDVD. Competing formats for the same marketplace. Betamax was a slightly higher quality than VHS but it lost out for various reasons.

I first saw "Purple Rain" on video in 85 because I came late to the party and missed the zeitgeist. I was so excited because we rented a VCR (remember having to do that) and the tape and damn if the VCR wasn't VHS and the tape was Betamax. It was too late to go back to the video store so I had to wait another day to see PR. Pissed me off something fierce!

I have boxes filled with Betamax vids and I'm younger...
I had to tape them all on VHS, so annoying, quality went from bad to crap. So sad, I have so many goodies on Betamax, used to tape every appearance of him from '85-mid nineties.
