Distortion = Has always been cool
Autotune = not really that cool anymore

commercial ballad? don't think so ..that would b 4ever ..this song is in the veins of political songs and a "ballad" as a lead off single is the wrong choice 2 do.

thats probably the worst thing about this song, the way he treats his vocals in this track. However, and thank god, the effects are fairly light and you cant hear them that much.

prince used to come up with weird things and people used to copy him, but some of the weird sounds and experiemental ideas he comes up with now just dont work, but he insists on using shitty autotune and other rubbish when he has a perfectly good voice. what prince doesnt realise is that autotune or melodyne are for singers that cant sing, to TUNE their voices - it doesnt sound good, it sounds gay.

i can't fault this song at all! i truly love it, rants & all..
it would be a commercial success in the uk 4 sure..
we LOVE a bit of political apathy...& when we get 2 feeling like prince & joe the plummer we can always opt 4 'the monster raving loonies' et al...
no spoof i swear..

The more I listen to this song, the more I love it. It's a classic, it really is.

1) Prince isn't saying evolution isn't a reality. Using the device of the narrative (upload/download), he's saying a faith in science and not god has equaled a world with no responsibility where people don't love one another.

2) I wouldn't classify the vocal distortion as "autotune." It may BE the same filter, but it's not being used in the same shittastic way that T-Pain utilizes the system. It's far closer to a "talk box" like Frampton used, but on a much, much lighter scale.

The whole package, as a result, gives the song a wonderfully nostalgic 60s/70s rock vibe. Reminds me much of Hendrix, and frankly, I feel that's the vibe he's going for.
I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.
