Critical reaction at the time of release?

How did the critics react to Princes early albums from 1980-1989?
They are now considered classics, but some albums back in the day were critically maligned but are now considered must-haves!
Was that the case for these now classic Prince albums?

Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, Around The World In A Day, Parade, Sign 'O' The Times, Lovesexy

Sometimes the critics(which I igged a lot)were cruel. They were hating because after listening to the ones they critisized, they just had to be. His music is and will always be great. Even now when I see him in concert, more mellow, older but Bad.....ddddd and I mean that in a good way. cool

1999 - Great
Purple Rain - Rave
Around the World in a Day - Mixed
Parade - America-Mostly positive (Suprising RS gave a weak review); Europe-Rave
SOTT - Rave (Highest Reviews ever in annual Village Voice Critics Poll)
Lovesexy - Mostly positive but a lot of people preferred the Black Album
Batman - Mixed

There was a link on HQ to a site that has tons of reviews from the very beginning...anyone have it? It's funny reading up on just how wrong some critics can be.

Too Many concentrated on the persona and not the music and most of their reviews weren't worth wiping butts on. barf
