Ok, HONESTLY..Was there a time you thought Prince was washed up?..HONESTLY Id have to say..After the return of "Prince" with the Rainbow Children.. I thought that was it. All that time as and his great return to Prince was that?!?! I know some people liked the album, but at that point..I thought his chances at ever being relavant again in current music were over.

I believe he is right now and has been for quite a while. I believe the reason he's doing so many covers is that he lacks the inspiration for making new songs - the passion is gone. I will not debate this with loons who get intravenous purple Kool-Aid administered daily, I just stated my opinion as asked by this thread.

Several times:
Graffiti Bridge (the movie, especially) The NPGmusic club period: lame plastic dance-funk and the censorship on his webssite. The Rainbow Children: boring, empty jazz-rock-fusion, and lyrics bordening on mentall illness The '3121'-thing: should i give a fuck about someone who thinks he is 'so important' when showing pictures of his superstar-house, filled with the fanciest furniture, and cushions with 'the symbol' on it? Since when did a creative, indepent artist like Prince started sollicitating to be on an episode of 'MTV cribs'? The Indigo Nights book: another expression of misguided self-importance. Pictures that show him posed and photoshopped to the max. Pictures as slick and annoying as songs like Mr. Goodnight.

Well... I am not a loon, nor do I drink purple kool-aid, but I assume you will 'allow' me to have an opinion about your opnion without you placing that sort of inuendo on me. I do not feel this is why he is doing covers. And I do not agree that he has had lack of inspiration seeing as 2 new cd's are soon coming out. And those new songs sound rather inspiring to me. No, I do not feel that Prince has ever been washed up. -you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude!

No, I do not feel that Prince has ever been washed up. Listen to the songs of the recent albums - it's a drum machine sounding exactly the same. The songs follow the same pattern and his lyrics sound like he sits in a tin can singing them. Then listen to whichever song from an album like "Controversy" - disregard the music style of the era, but listen to the passion with which the music was made. There is no comparing the two, none. Every time I listen to the older stuff I cringe from thinking about the recent stuff, cause I feel a definite loss. I mourn the music.

Was this supposed to be a critical response or just your emotional (negative) reaction to these periods, cuz for me, the The NPGMC/Rainbow Children period was Prince's last great musical period. There was a quality to his musical output from that time - songs like Rope Of Silicon and The Daisy Chain were full of charisma. Then despite the lyrics in places, The Rainbow Children was his most cohesive sounding album since Diamonds & Pearls.

I think Prince does covers because he knows he can do them better. I also think he wants the other artists who he is covering to attempt to do covers of his music. Very few singers can do a good cover of Prince's music but Prince always does a better cover than the original artist. Prince is such an overlooked artist and by doing covers he wants to prove his talents and gain more fans.

I really only thought that Prince was washed up once, and it was during the New Power Soul era. That album (and the NPG Power Pack) really disappointed me.
I enjoyed the Emancipation/CB/The Truth era, and then welcomed and enjoyed Rave. I even enjoyed the NPGMC tracks, because they had that "Internet Only" vibe.

Have you considered the possibility that the reason why the songs that made him famous sound so good has anything to do with the technology that was used to record them? If he recorded Controversy today, it would sound no different - forget the passion that you don't hear, because that's ENTIRELY subjective (80s Prince people and 90s Prince people hear Prince differently.)

I don't cringe when I hear the new stuff vs. the old stuff, but they are night-and-day. The "technology" excuse doesn't really hold up. In the 80s, he used inferior equipment (compared to today) and created lush, timeless sounds. The difference is that he used to create his own sounds and trends; now he chases trends. Prince released about 10-15 great albums (about half of those being "masterpieces"). Problem is, we got them in the same timeframe (10-15 years). With normal artists, those albums would've lasted an entire career.

Yes honestly, all through the 90's
And when he released "The Rainbow Children", I thought he was most definitely done and over, I thought he didn't have a single original or intelligent idea left in him. The only Prince album I can say I hate.

Now, the last decent thing he did was TRC, the last bunch of albums have been just weak, it's Prince on autodrive...
Only Lotusflower will tell if he has got his mojo back but that all depends if he ever releases the damn thing... Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

There is no doubt about that. There was 1980-87 (the genius years) and everything he's released since (reactionary, uninspired fluff). the music knows what your motives are when you are making it
listen to The Replacements - its good for the soul

So if he knows he does them better (which of course I don't agree with), why hasn't he consistently made this many covers earlier in his career? He should've wanted to share his superiour understanding of other artists' work for a long time then. No? I think his best chance is to get Jimi to cover one of his songs.
