On this Date 1993

On this date in 1993, "Billboards," a ballet
with music by Prince and dancing by the Joffrey Ballet, opened in
Iowa City, Iowa. Prince didn't attend the show, which featured 13
of his songs. The ballet company's artistic director called it the
first full-length rock ballet performed in this country.

I was there! I loved Billboards. I thought it was an incredibly cool thing to do, and Prince's generosity with not collecting the usual money for the songs allowed the struggling Joffrey to do this. That was a very fun night. The car from Lovesexy was in the lobby, roped off so you couldn't get close, but still impressive. All in all, what an amazing show. I still watch the video of it from time to time and enjoy it a lot.

It was released on VHS, so it probably won't be hard to find on an auction site.

oh yeah, I went to see it in Boston. It was a great show.
One thing I remember is how cool it was to hear Prince's
songs played over a super loud (and bass-heavy) sound system!
Me and my friend were also astonished when we saw that wine
was being served during the intermission lol

For some reason, this was on TV in Spain. And it's bizarre, because on Spanish TV you don't usually have either ballet or good music.

i saw this in Detroit and remember really enjoying The Question of U and Thunder portions of the show. i was happy so many who may not have heard some of Prince's 'non-hits' were hearing it on a great system with incredible dancing to accompany it

Prince mixed an extended version of Thunder for this Ballet tour.
