Romeo and Juliet's When Doves Cry...UGH! My best friend was born in 83 like me, but months before I was. She asked me to sing one time, and I started asking her which song. She said the song from Romeo and Juliet (she meant the new one), and I was like Kissing You? She said the one about Doves. I just shook my head and gave her a history lesson. SAD!!! I knew that song when I was 2 or 3 years old and heard it for years.
This is why I now agree with Prince being uptight about his work. [Edited 1/25/09 15:24pm]

Scads of young people know songs, albums, entire discographies of acts like Zeppelin or Bowie or The Stones, but most people in my generation are hard-put to identify even one or two songs by the Lil Dude. The guy is a living legend, and most people 25 and under think he was a one hit wonder. True, WB does limit somewhat how much he can do with his 80's catalogue, but a lot of this situation is his own fault. Years of poor promotional practices and marketing have resulted in a collective "WHO?" from Gen Y when asked about the guy. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

That was confirmed to me last week at work, when a 24yr old girl i work with said that she "doesn't know one Prince song". At most they know WDC or PR. It's shocking. Everybody in that age bracket knows more about his peers MJ and Madonna, and can reel off songs for both easily. I just think, what happened? how can he be so obscure outside his hardcore fans such a great, legendary artist should be better known.

Prince was the only act at Coachella to NOT allow his performance to be part of the Webcast, so while it may have impressed the 20-somethings who were in the audience, Prince did himself a disservice by cutting himself off from greater exposure. If Prince insisted on the Webcast exclusion because an official DVD was planned, well, we'll never see that either. "I Was FINE Back in the Day!"

Madonna is still relevent, and everyone knows tons about MJ regardless of what they think of him. But Prince? I actually had to explain to some of my peers who he was when he played the Superbowl. Outside his fanbase and other musicians, there's not a lot of public knowledge about the guy. Hell, most folk think he's still using the Symbol as a name. And I wonder, how can this have happened? How can someone who's broken records, had a hand in reworking music industry business practices, and been the second youngest person ever inducted into the Hall of Fame be barely known by the current generation? How is it that someone who is constantly namedropped by the performers young people do listen to is essentially a nobody to that crowd? It's not all a matter of his music not being "new" or on the Top 40, because there are a lot of young people who know everything about Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, etc. So what happened? How is it Prince has allowed himself this invisibility and disregard? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

While I do understand the financial and business motivations of keeping as much material as possible under his control, this tight reign on internet videos/webcasts/youtube IS hurting him in that it's preventing the spread of his work to potential new fans. And let's face it -my generation relies on services like youtube and downloading to find out about music they might not hear on the radio. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

..Ever heard Leann Rimes version of "Purple Rain"? After hearing that, I can understand why P doesn't want people covering his music.

I hate having to explain something that everyone should know about. I really hope Prince does something to turn this around. It needs to change NOW. [Edited 1/26/09 13:57pm] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

That does not sound good! Yep, I spoke to a 19 year old a few months back, and he'd never heard of Prince. Never HEARD of Prince....!!! I was shocked, really! Oh, and just as bad, on Saturday night I was at a party talking to a guy who was definitely old enough to know better, we were talking about music, he said he loved 80's music, and when I mentioned Prince, he said "Yeah, but he's a bit of a 'pansy' isn't he?" I probably gave him the most disgusted look I've ever given anyone in my life, I couldn't really believe what I was hearing! The ignorance is astonishing..... [Edited 1/26/09 15:52pm]

I don't care about his being at the top of the charts or not, but a little musical education of the younger generation could go a long way. It's just frustrating for me having to explain to people my own age (23) or older who this person is, and then I get regarded as some kind of freak for knowing. Same story if I bring up T-Rex, btw. But that's another thread. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

[Edited 1/26/09 13:57pm] All true but it further proves his brilliance. He managed to do all that without making any fuss. I also hate having to explain things about him and am made to feel that I have to justify my loving him, especially when most people will immediatly point out how 'weird' he is! On one hand it is a shame he's not more known but he deserves to have only the important people like the hardcore fans and the rock and roll hall of fame on his side. He shouldn't have anything less than hardcore fans at concerts and plus it's hard enough getting tickets as it is so lets continue to keep him to ourselves! An artist like Prince deserves recognition, not obscurity. That's like saying only Art History majors with a strong understanding of painterly theory should be allowed into the Louvre. And I have a problem with the designation "hardcore fans", because it implies that only that select group -a group that I doubt any two people could define who qualifies and who doesn't -are worthy of seeing this musician work his magic. At best that approach is elitist and snobbish. Who's to say who's deserving of hearing music? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
