Graffiti Bridge: The Movie

How far do you accept this film as the sequel to "Purple Rain"?

- So his father actually did die at the end of Purple Rain. Then his mother went crazy and into mental hospital. What an anti-climax.

- Billy died too and left the club to Prince and The Time. Why didn't Dez and his Modernaires get a slice of the pie? Appolonia 6? hehe

- On that note, what happened to Appolonia anyways? Weren't they forever? smile

- Is Jill Jones character supposed to be the same one from Purple Rain? Gone is the peroxide blonde hair, waitress job and in comes panty dropping attitude and showgirl job.

- Why didn't George Clinton get more storyline? I bet there was some fun to be had right there. Lets face it this film could have used some "fun".

Anymore bones of contention? smile

A few more observations about this movie...

***After performing "Love Machine",Morris and Aura walk right past Prince.Aura stops and looks at Prince, and he has a big smile on his face. But then,a few moments later,he is all sad and depressed on top of a building,as he sings "Thieves In The Temple".

***Speaking of "Love Machine",that was supposed to be Jill's big number but she only gets to sing the first chorus! Aura takes over the song, and it turns into a Morris/Aura duet.Shouldn't Jill have been pissed about this? wink

***In one scene,Tevin refers to Mavis as "mom".Isn't she just a little too old to have a son that young?

***The most absurd scene in the film is during "Joy In Repetition" where Prince is carrying Aura into his home, while he is wearing that ridiculous outfit.

***Why does Mavis' performance of "Melody Cool" look so forced? It just seems to come out of nowhere. Was this a way of jump-starting a dull movie?

Aura could just be miming to Jill's singing no? Well it's not Jill's singing either but there we go... smile

You see? Again, these folks are thinking too much about the movie. Just leave the damn thing as it is. It's not really a sequel per se, but it does follow Purple Rain in some way.

What's funny is,neither Jill nor Aura are really singing those parts. The real singer is Elisa Fiorillo.

Poor Jill always gets dogged in Prince's films. In 'Purple Rain',she had to sit back and watch another woman (Apollonia) steal Prince's heart. Then,in the sequel, she actually gets to play Prince's girlfriend,UNTIL another woman steals his heart again (Aura).

Yeah, it could have used more disastrous acting and implausibility. biggrin

I think it was too much of a cliche to have Prince's father die and his mother goes into a mental hospital. That sounds like something from a bad afternoon soap opera smile

"what happened to Apollonia anyways"

Did we really wanna see a revival of Apollonia 6 in the sequel? smile

Even the most die hard fan would have to admit it was shite with very few redeeming qualities (apart from the music that is)

However it is still better than average and if you you take the role played by the Time to represent record Companies/Big Corporations , it makes a wee bit more sense , and it shows that he has stayed true to this artisitc vision (for better or for worse) since the film was made.

In my opinion,'GB' had too many similarities to 'Purple Rain'...

***In the first movie,Prince's love interest is played by a Latina chick (Apollonia),just as in 'GB'.

***In the first movie,Prince and Morris are fighting for the same girl,as in 'GB'.

***In the first movie, there is a "battle of the bands" thing going on,just as in 'GB'.

***Both albums begin with a blazing rock number ("Let's Go Crazy" and "I Can't Stop This Feeling I Got").

***Both movies feature a "I'm in despair"-type song ("When Doves Cry" and "Thieves In The Temple").

***At the end of both movies,Prince performs a dramatic ballad that somehow makes everything alright ("Purple Rain" in the first film, and "Still Would Stand All Time" in 'GB').

***Both movies feature Prince on his purple motorcycle

***Both movies feature Prince feuding with his band (in the first movie,Lisa and Wendy had problems with Prince...in the sequel, the bandmembers were perplexed by some of Prince's decisions ("I told you man,you shoulda let me rap!"..."Damn! This is so embarassing").

But despite all the similarities,'GB' is still a sorry sequel that just doesn't have the energy and excitement of the first film (very few sequels do).

The bike is black in GB but yeah. Like you say it's a shame this film had to be tied in with "Purple Rain" as it only spoilt it's legacy.

T.C. Ellis' insistence that his rapping would make everything alright is one of the more amusing aspects of the film IMO, whether intentional or no. smile

LOL...I kept laughing everytime he would say "Yo Kid,when are you gonna let me rap?".Those scenes were unintentially funny.I remember a critic summed up the plot of the movie by saying that The Kid's mission this time around was to "beat back the scourge of rap music" smile

GB is more like a spiritual version of Purple Rain as opposed 2 a sequel.
