I realize that I'm a new orger, but I also realize that more new orgers have come and will continue to come. And it stands to reason that one or all of them will want to discuss this or some other topic that is mundane and asinine to vet orgers.
But that doesn't mean it's necessary to start with the 'oh my god not this again' bullshit. Yeah there could be better things discussed, but there are other things, no matter how tired and repeated, that people might want to discuss too. Just because it's been discussed before doesn't mean it can't be discussed again should someone want to participate. How many different incarnations of 'What's your favorite Prince song' have there been? More than any other topic, much less any Prince vs MJ topic which I never said anything about to begin with. The fact that we're here on this board having the discussion answers the question already. People have every right to complain about a topic, but the simple fact that it's already been discussed doesn't mean it won't get brought up again eventually. The jackasses that I was referring to are the people who seem to lose sight of that fact. [Edited 1/20/09 20:30pm]

[Edited 1/20/09 20:30pm] But the thing about the Org is that there's always something to talk about, and if people looked on the search engine, they would see that this particular thread has come up several times before and the same thing is said, which is why people can get irritated It also wasn't like people were actually angry. Since you're new, you're gonna see that we joke around here alot. Notice the GIFs here and in the Non Prince and GD sections? So there honestly was no need to call people jackasses [Edited 1/20/09 21:48pm] "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. Actually Michael was whipering in James's ear telling him to introduce and announce Prince. I don't know why he left, it was his idea. That's why James said "He just insisted that I introduce Prince." Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Is it just a rights issue that the DVD of this performance lacks (!!!!) the Prince part? (i.e. $$$)
Or is the below-par appearance the reason? You decide... Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

It's strange how, at times, he faltered a bit when an appearance that he didn't create occured.
If he created his own spotlight he was spot on, every time. But if he didn't ask for it, his mentality seemed to be a 'why should i give you the time of day?' type of thing. I'm only speaking of the good old purple days, not the present of course. The whole thing with not speaking to Dick Clark on Bandstand, this appearance, etc.

I was scared to watch this scene for a long time but then when I watched it, I did this: I don't know what happened to old P but man, he was fucked up! One thing's for sure, he never acted like this on stage again. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Well, I'd wager that Prince probably freaked the asexual Michael Jackson out on many levels. Talent wise, obviously, but just the raw sexuality that Prince drips (particularly at that time) couldn't have been comfortable. Not to say they didn't have conversations, I know they obviously did over the years, what with the whole Bad thing. Plus, Michael probably had some delusions he was a better artist, and for a few minutes there, history agreed with him. That quickly changed though, and now it's pretty clear who's playing top and who's playing bottom :p =reaching

Truth is Prince shit himself, he was out of his comfort zone. anyone that knows anything about P knows he was vehemantly anti-drugs and drink at this point in his career.
He cracked, Even JB in his autobiography documented this as Prince 'being nervous', next time he saw him, he was ready and more prepared. and he had it down. Those were JB's words himself. It was 1983, MJ (as a seasoned vet and in his Motown25 coronation year) was drawing the battlelines with this Prince 'upstart' he'd read about (if only for the next few yrs), 2009 now and still folks just have to make their drug/drunk excuses for P. Why couldn't be in awe of JB and MJ back then? Why not? Oh yeah, Prince had to be at a disadvantage, he just had to be. seeing as it was the one time they all shared a stage and it's unbearable P came last. tough!. it happened back then. long time ago though eh? I didn't get the impression he was drunk. Just nervous.
People point to the pole pulling down thing as indicative of his inebriation. I think it was just an honest mistake - he probably thought it was heavier, and was trying to be slick and sly by spinning around the pole Gene Kelly 'Singin in the Rain' style. Instead, the whole thing came down. I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. I've always said he was "just NERVOUS," even before I read that quote from JB. U've got pros James Brown and Michael Jackson on stage who've invited Prince up next; of course he was fidgety or clouded from happy fear. Plus, he didn't have his own guitar to play, which I think made him uncomfortable in the very beginning. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Exactly when in 1983 was this? I really have a hard time believing he was just nervous. If you've ever watched a 1999 show its obvious he already had the chops to do a good improv of some sort. And I really think following MJ and being on stage with JB would be motivation for someone like him in that time period to give it his all, not flake out...

It was in September, 1983. U're right about Prince being good at improv., but he carefully planned and was in control/in charge of his own shows. The same cannot be said about a surprising guest spot during the James Brown concert. And JB was one of his biggest influences that I'm sure he wanted to impress, so I think its understandable why he would be flustered when called on stage at that time.
