Interesting.

Couple suggestions: slow it down a bit..... it's too fast vs. the original and sounds kinda rushed.

And the drummer is not playing the traditional drum parts. it has a different feel.

also, the intro guitar licks....sounds like you aren't playing the right voicings of the chords. like you're using an inversoin that's too high or something. Are you using the sus2 in the Bb chord?

Singer sounds cool.

Rock on though!

Cool comments, thanks! Although we weren't going for a "cover", more less a remake with a totally different feeling...

I was going to say the same thing about the intro guitar sound, but didn't know how to put it. The notes seem a little too high -- kinda like Purple Rain crossed with Free Bird.

I'm glad you took my suggestions at face value smile. I think it's cool if you want to do your own version.

Since this song is so popular even among non-fans, my suggestion would be to at least start the song closer to the original....that way you get live audiences immediately excited and into your song.

Then.... as it progresses, change it up and make it your own.

So I'd make the intro closer to the original ..... those first few guitar chords are key.....they signal the song. In my band our guitarist doesn't always play it "right" either....and yest it's an artistic choice, but I think you gain a lot by just hitting those first 2 or 3 chords in the proper voicing becasue you hit on that sub-conscious memory people have and they will start getting into it.

I don't play guitar so I can't tell you the voicing but I do know it's crucial to include the sus2 note in the opening chord (if you're doing it in the original key then it's a Bb with a C instead of a D).

Also, have the drummer mimic the snare hits in the intro the way Prince usually does it. There's something about how that first snare comes in that IMO is a key part of the intro.

From there, you can change the feeling to make it your own, but I my guess is crowds will be screaming for you guys if you just do that teeny bit in the beginning the way it sounds on record.

Ok, I will listen to the original some more to see about incorporating the original drum beats and send you comments over to the guitarist. I don't have any chance of knowing about chords, up or down, or whatever..i'm pretty tone deaf..thanks for the advice!!

Did you listen to the whole song? It's obviously not a copied rendition. Dismantle put their own twist on this song, giving it a different flavor. Obviously your love for Prince won't allow you to give it a chance, and I understand that. Some people are small minded. But didn't your mother ever tell you "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?" She should have. It's o.k. Just next time, think before you post. lol

Why are you critising one for not liking a certain taste in music? confuse

People can and will have a different set of opinion on a music peice(s), one may like it while the other may not. We arent going to like the same music even if its another song or genre. Maybe they did listen to it, maybe they didnt.

Why even start a thread asking if they like the song or not then want positive posts all the time, then criticise the ones that dont like it? Its senceless Imho.

Even Im debating on expessing if I like it or not from what Im seeing on this thread. rolleyes

Maybe you should think before you post.

I think the issue is that this person just called them a "wannabe". Which is not very constructive. I mean, they are admitedly doing a cover. So they are not copycats, rather they are doing a cover.

My comments were not necessarily positive yet I think they were constructive.

Your comments wasnt as rude either. Calling the person "small minded"(like cmmcqui did to dayclear) is rude ONLY cause they may not have like the version of it or whatever their reason was. BIG difference nod wink

I would never criticize one for their taste in music. Dayclear said "copycat wannabe's." That's neither constructive or positive and I'm sure that the posters original intention was for feed back. Not rudeness. What I find senseless is that you would favor the dayclear type of criticism rather than a reasonable approach. Ex: Why he didn't like it, the drums were too loud, the singer isn't that great, etc. By the way, calling someone small minded is no different than calling someone a wanna be. Sorry you couldn't get through to me.

Just cool to know bands are out there rockin' the Prince smile
