Make up your minds ppl. Chocolate Box is HOTT! i also find it amusing to see people commenting on lyrics of a FUNK SONG. Why do artists like bootsy or james brown get a pass for low content lyrics and prince dosent? Funk has never been about LYRICS. The main focus on this genre is grooves. YES the lyrics are silly on box of chocolate and prince probably knows it. but isnt that the point?. [Edited 1/16/09 15:15pm]

Make up your minds ppl. Chocolate Box is HOTT! You are right. I think it is hott too! The issue is that there are people that say he does not sound like he used to. Then you got people saying he sounds like he's 20. It all comes down to this: People have differing opinions, and tastes... If you do not care for the new stuff, then move on. If you appreciate what Prince was, is, and always will be (an experimenting artist) then stick around and appreciate what he gives. Personally, in my mind and taste, no one can beat Prince. His music/style/sounds have always appealed to me, and likely always will. I think he does what he feels when he feels it. He does not care if he sounds like what everyone else sounds like, or what he used to sound like. He does what he wants to do in a point in time. He, is a musical genious. He will never satisfy everyone/yet people tend to judge everything he does. They can keep judging...I'll keep listening and jamming. Good music is a matter of taste, but those that don't dig his anymore, should move on and stop berating every new song. Wow, that was a lot right there. Since it doesn't seem like Prince knows how to connect to an audience anymore, it sounds like you got the answer to Prince's "problem". So tell us, what should Prince do to get that audience that he seems to have lost back? I wanna know this one. I know you are saying that with a heady level of snark and sarcasm but that is okay. It's not about getting the audience back. It's about these half assed marketing ploys that won't equal to branding the record in the public's mind. You think I am the only one who thinks this? Better think again on that one. The marketers behind the scene are not going to run to help promote this. That's a fact. And it's the distributors and the social engineers/perception managert who run this, not the artist. Prince is so fueled on ego, he doesn't realize that. He thinks every record will be an epic event and calls up the LA times and thinks this time he has it right. Meanwhile this whole press release (it's not article it's a press release) is championing the return of the electro retro prince and the premier of pro tools (desperately), a interesting guitar oriented record and the arrival of a new protege named Bria Valente who is somewhere between Mayte and J Lo on the interesting scale. MPLSound and Elixir looks and sounds extremely insincere from the songs I have heard. No one is going to go for this. Impression is everything especially in these 21st century days. But you missed the positive thing I said. Lotus does have a chance of being marketed a critics acclaimed choice. But talking about these other two just clutters it. Trust me, thats why no one will get behind promoting Prince. Because people are waiting for the right marketing/promotion presentation and it hasn't been there since Diamond and Pearls. So what he has to do is drag out that Purple Rain melody one more time to the live audience. He knows how to do that schtick easily. (Superbowl,21 nights) Prince might want to talk to Dylan's people how he is able to get people to talk about his new material at the drop of a hat. It's pretty clear why Prince contacted LA TIMES. He needs promotion that he can trust. Unfortunately for him, one press interview isnt going to cut it. He is so paranoid he won't grant any access to many journalists. Partially due to his ability to not cope with any challenging questions. Without that momentum of press the projects get killed before it gets started. Without a street team these records won't be acknowledged. And no amount of touring is going to get those records heard or bought. Prince isn't giving the people enough and that's just how the game is played. Most people are just going to rapidshare/megaupload/zshare/badongo his music and just keep it moving.

By god, what a terrible, embarrassing song Box of Chocolates is. And don't tell me how it's 'only thirty seconds,' etc, it's not redeemable after that pathetic opening.
- Pro Tools studio sound (real music by real musicians): Check - Linn sound to get a Pavlovian reaction from the drooling fams: Check - Vocal delivery and lyrics that Brooke Hogan would probably take a pass on for being too cliche?: Check The man is closer to 60 than 30 and he's still singing lyrics like he's 20. Someone needs to tell Prince that he's not Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan. Hell, they've probably even graduated past tripe like this by now. And what is there to say about the dreck that is All My Love? My god. An easy listening disaster. Wall, with this response you have made many fanatical new powers orger's teeth shatter from clenching too hard in defiant purple anger. And thanks to you I have a new power soul tooth splinter lodged in my eye. How dare you speak your mind on a forum in this tone, sir! The funny thing is, he's right. And "this where the party be" schtick only works for so long. No more partying songs about hopping around with pretty women trying to impress the clubbers and the socialites. You can do it if you can pull it off but if it's so obvious wreaking of desperation, it's going to be difficult for the audience not to see it. Man, this is so sad. The shit is played to the gills and the PUBLIC does take notice. Wall isn't dissing Prince, it's a public service announcement. [Edited 1/16/09 15:44pm] [Edited 1/16/09 15:46pm]

Prince gets a pass as well. He has written numerous songs with, as U say, "low content lyrics" that are fantastic. "Mr. Pretty Man" is an example with lyrics that work well, also "Black Sweat." And speaking of chocolate, just listen to The Time's "Chocolate." That's an example of a silly simplistic song he's written (with phenomenal funk music), yet unlike the preview of "Chocolate Box" the former's lyrics are clever, instead of being, well, trite. I'm not presenting dissatisfaction with the new mplssound song, as its only a preview and the music is cool, but my reaction to its lyrics so far is : "Meh. They're alright. Heard them before." "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee
"Water can nourish me, but water can also carry me. Water has magic laws." - JCVD

Wait, I'm confused here. Doesn't P still host hot parties with pretty women and socialites aplenty? Your point would have some validity if he wasn't still a popular fixture in that scene anymore. But, the man is still doing his thing...even at an "advanced" age. The content of that line is still relevant, because quite frankly where he is IS where the party be...don't you think?

Let me get this right. You think that Prince does not "catch" listeners attention due to lack of marketing? So, you think marketing is the key? Where marketing definately helps, Prince has a huge fan base all on his own. And I don't know, but you may want to rethink the "one press interview isn't going to cut it" suggestion. It may not be a huge marketing scheme, but people have been coming up to me every day (ppl that know I am a Prince fan) saying, "Hey, heard Prince is coming out with some new albums this year" Something must be working, because the public is hearing about it/without it being televised (or whatever marketing technique you would like to use). But I digress... Back to my first sentence... Prince apparently still catches many listeners. He sold out 21 nights in a row in the same arena. I mean, Wow! I am not saying you are all wrong in your thesis, but I do not feel you are correct either. [Edited 1/16/09 18:24pm] -you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude!

What makes the lyrics so utterly pathetic and laughable isn't that he's fifty years old, but the manner in which they're written and delivered. This fifty year old sounds like a fifteen year old girl trying to get her big break on some Nickelodeon sanctioned album/sitcom. There's nothing wrong with well delivered 'sexual' lyrics or come-ons but one would like to think a man who's old enough to be a grandfather would show at this point in his career some maturation or common sense and not sound like a desperate teen idol, following what they think is the blueprint to get played in all the shopping malls. Fergie is currently like Bob Dylan next to Prince. I also love how since he's a JW he takes this sanctimonious road of not swearing, yet will pant some juvenile come on -- because as long as he's not swearing, he can lust all he wants, I mean, they might be talking about marriage, right? What a joke. It's like the Christian who thinks they're still being holy as long as they just have oral sex. Prince is the biggest colonized mind of them all. I think his ability to no longer think for himself is responsible for his PG rated music and lyrics. He's now got to shift his mind from its former free self to fit into the rules and regulations of his religion. As a result and so as not to say anything 'too dirty' or 'unholy... technically' he sounds like a teenager and not an adult, even though he's over fifty. No hard feelings.
