i guess not many people on this thread like this song that much, I wonder if Prince reads these threads.

Prince its not too late! Dont put CB on MPLSOUND,! people will appreciate it more as one of your long lost bootlegs! PS (and while your at it, please also think seriously about NOT putting never be another like me on MPLSOUND).

I dig the cut. I'm a bit puzzled as 2 how it can get slammed when people have only heard a few seconds of the track.

Me too!! You get a 30 second or so clip of a song, And that then becomes enough to determine the quality of the whole?

Does that make any sense to anyone else?

True, true. After I had left a comment about this song, It kept bothering me, that I should not be concerned about a few lyrics... guess I jumped the gun on this one, but I am hoping the song has a good message included. cool

I don't hate it but I can see why some people whould not be thrilled with the lyrics of the snippet we've heard. But I'll keep and open mind. Hell if I can live through the Tony M era and a lot of the lyrics along the lines of "Poo Goo" I guess I shouldn't complain huh? lol

First impressions matter.

I think what the 1st impression translates 2 is the intro's lyric, and the use of auto-tune.

Fans here R used 2 Prince being clever, even when he is being playful. So when they see a title like "Chocolate Box", they may have expected some other meaning, whether deeper, or simply, say... he meets a girl, and she keeps these special chocolates in her special chocolate box, which she's very protective of... something like that...

With the lyric being:

"I got a box of chocolates that'll knock the socks off any girl that comes my way"

It appears that the song is about him actually just having good chocolates that would impress any girl.

UNTIL we hear the rest of the song's lyrics, we don't know if that's the case, or if Prince will twist it 2 mean something else.

With the auto-tune used as an effect... Well, I don't prefer it. He uses it creatively, but I'd take a vocoder or talkbox any day of the week.

LINN: Nice.

Once U get past the intro, the song sounds like it could get interesting. I like the way he's singing.

As I said on another thread...

I'm an old school Prince head. I know 2 listen 2 whole albums several times before forming a perspective.

I want the entire bodies of work... then I check it.

I'm not presently listening 2 the radio rips, or his clips...

I am waiting.

As if Chocolate Box sounds like an outtake from the 80's. With it's juvenile lyrics and Pro Tools plastic sound, Chocolate Box is a blatant rip off of contemporary disposable pop music, it's hardly something that would fit on Dirty Mind or Sign O The Times.

And what's more, nobody is asking Prince to return to a dated sound. That only produces sentimental rubbish.

oh no? then what u been spilling out on these threads ever since the radio show played the new songs? u've been crying and ripping ur hair out 4 prince 2 return 2 the days where u loved him the most ..so i could care less when chocolate box was originally recorded, i'm coming at it with an open mind and honestly a 30 sec bit isn't enough 4 me 2 either say i like it or i don't like it. u have already thumbed ur nose at everything he's done lately. okay i get it u don't like it.
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

There hasn't been a more blatant lie on this board in its history. Produce one quote where I've been 'crying and ripping out my hair' for Prince to return to the past or past sounds. Shouldn't be hard since according to you it's all I do.

Brilliant retort. The point is, you're wrong in saying I've ever called for Prince to return to a dated sound. But it's much easier to act suddenly bored with an incorrect statement you made, isn't it? Of course I don't blame you for a sudden apathy regarding your own statements because you would end up spending a lot of time fruitlessly searching for a post I made where I said Prince should return to his 80's sound because there aren't any. You were wrong in saying it but you have good company. Most fams react to any criticism of Prince by assuming if you're critical of his latest fluff, you therefore want to hear Purple Rain Part II. Brilliant logic, that.

The irony is, Prince is the one who will happily regress. When all else fails, it's time to drag out the Linn and hope you can recapture some of that magic. This trend began with Rave when "Prince" was the producer and we were to return to his glory days. Yawn. But the appeal of Prince's earlier work was that it was progressive in its approach not regressive. The sense of something new, not old is what made him who he is. Regression produces nothing but bad art.

But again, I rarely see anyone saying Prince should return to his past sound. It's another moronic straw man argument made by the herd of fams who can't grasp critcial thought.

I agree that regression may produce bad art...However, it is not all of us that feels he is regressing.
I personally enjoyed Rave and felt it was fresh and new. I enjoyed many songs from Musicology, as well as Planet Earth. Rainbow Children...Nah, not my thing (maybe one or two cuts). And the list could go on.
But not everyone feels that he is regressing.
I would like to ask you this. What specifically, gives you the feeling of his regression? This is not a "cut" at you, I would really like to know.
I personally get the feeling that Prince is continuously searching his soul for new/fresh music. I just do not see this regression you suggest. And it is not because I am one of the "herd of fams who cannot grasp critical thought"
I am sure it is as simple as the fact that we see/hear things very differently. What is a regressing song/gesture to you, may feel like progression to me or someone else.
Do you feel that "fams" here at the org. are not thinking critically because they are enjoying the newer tracks?

Before you win an argument, you need to be able to follow an argument. Nobody said you were calling for Prince to return to the sound of the 80's. Your inital post stated: u've been crying and ripping ur hair out 4 prince 2 return 2 the days where u loved him the most That is what I've been responding to. If you hurl false claims in the future, do try and keep up with any rebuttals.

sure okay what should we call u then bitter person that can't create his own music but it's easy 2 hide behind a Wall called a keyboard?

The purpose of criticism in any field of art is to attempt to understand why anyone should care about the work of art being presented.

i'm so ready 2 hear u music, oh wait.. u can't even read or play a instrument can u?

No, I can't. And therefore, you're right: Chocolate Box is a brilliant song. Great argument.

I like it alot. People are getting way to personal as usual with a Prince album or song but that is how Prince brought us together in the first place. By personally touching us. If I wasnt a fan i wouldnt had known this even exsisted. Just like I dont know what is going on with Metallica or AC/DC so what does it really matter what he is doing?

Prince could out sell any tour in every state easily with just his name alone, so what's the point? Why cant we just wait and see instead of b*ching...some people are acting as if he is about to end his career. They said his career was over when The Raibow Children came out and he STILL here.

Typical responses on this site to constructive criticism of Prince:

"Who do you think you are, criticizing Prince? You've never made any music."

"You just want Prince to make Sign 'O' the Times again. Get over it, so you can enjoy the new music."

"You're just being negative about the new stuff because you hate your life."

"You're trying to tell Prince what to do, but you don't know anything."

A logician would laugh himself to tears reading some of the responses to posters like Wall.

A logician would laugh himself to tears reading some of the responses to posters like Wall.

how is someone who only post negative comments about Prince and his music constructive criticism? Do you welcome comments from those who only post positive comments no matter what as well?

the balance of good and bad remarks make the Org great, but i don't see how extremes are constructive.
