i think amazon will most def be stocking the music.
at some stage anyway.
just a hunch.
cuz as yet we dunno who the big retailer is - what about people in europe who can't jog down 2 bestbuys or whateva?
what if website has a joining fee? (as hinted by dr funken)
that would limit sales..
joe the plumber ain't gonna join!
p would have 2 consider getting the physical product out somehow.

Ok cool, I exaggerate a little, but would you consider yourself, or ANY Prince fan a "typical" anything.

Wal-Mart = Best possible prices on a limited amount of products, the very definition of mass market consumerism.
They wouldn’t be doing their job if the end cap wasn’t filled with the latest “High School Musical” or whatever teens find interesting at the moment, than a Prince record.

The latest AC/DC album Black Ice had great success being sold exclusively at Wal Mart and online.

I think Target or Best Buy. Either way, both stores are in the same mall where I live. I believe in that article discussing the interview he had recently, there was a mention that the album would be sold online on the new site, as well as a retailer he has an agreement with.

One question though, if downloadable only from his official site, will liner notes, that we can print off from our computer, be included with the purchase or will there be a separate fee for it? We shall see.

Ther is a Target, a Best Buy and a Wal Mart all within a mile of where I work and a K-Mart within 3 miles so pretty much any chain he picks I'm golden biggrin

All I know is it better NOT be Walmart.

I thought Target just cause I keep seeing what I suspect to be the same bottle of 3121 hangin there month after month when I go there. lol

Plus they've done a lot of exclusive cd releases. Isn't Xtina's through them only?

U're hearing it here: IF Amazon ends up being the xclusive online retailer 4 the hard copy of the album, TARGET will b the store that carries it.

if you order merchandise from target.com, doesn't it operate through amazon.com?

The Target by me (Detroit suburb) still has the 3121 picture up (the one that looks like the Black Sweat video).

I would be very surprised if he went outside of Target or Best Buy. Those have been his biggest outlets since he left WB.

I like Amazon nod

I really doubt that P would use wal-mart.. if it makes it 2 a retail store, it'll probably be Target.

Does no one realise that if Prince uses Walmart or Target then he'd be limiting the album sales to US only? He'd then have to make different deals for Europe and Asia. I don't think he's that short sighted.

I'm convinced it'll be an international retailer like Amazon.

UK yes but Walmart doesn't import discs (and hardly any stock) from the US, so the album would still be unavailable in Europe.

What?...Walmart / ASDA will sell anything ..they sell CD's ..so the channel is the same...Prince won't be burning CD's and then putting them in boxes for shipping ? lol lol

Are you guys serious?

Do you not realise the US and European inventory is wildly different?

Compare the US and UK online stores, they have different content and what is available on both sites has had seperate (and usually different) releases in both countries. Some artists/CDs available in the US stores are simply not available in the UK stores.

You should also note that movies and games available in the US are not available in the UK unless it's had a UK release and even then the product is different (certification, content, packaging etc).

My point is this; unless stores like Walmart change the way music is released and shipped in their chain, I seriously doubt Prince's (or anyone else's) albums pressed in the US will be sold in their international stores.

Of course, it's possible (though highly unlikely in my opinion), Prince, Walmart or another US bricks and mortar store will make arrangements to press and/or ship discs Internationally, but imagine the extra cost to them and us? This would also complicate any DVD type content that Prince might want to produce (region/Pal & Ntsc standards/certification differences).

There are other international options I hadn't considered: rough trade or Hear Music (Starbucks) though neither are big box retailers - No Idea what their sales are like but I heard Paul McCartney did okay and they do international distribution within their chain.

I dunno, I don't think I even care - as long as I can buy a physical disc I'll be happy!!!

Absolutely. I highly doubt that it will be Walmart but I was pointing out that it could be quite easily done - make international sales mail-order only and use ASDA's existing internet arm to distribute in Europe. Those CDs and DVDs could be printed in Europe to keep delivery costs and lead times down to a minimum They could even rebrand and use a new name and website for the distribution (ASDA entertainment also sell under two different names already that I know of). The whole purpose of it being a one-outlet deal is to keep middlemen out of the deal, so why not?

I'd prefer that to buying anything out of Starbucks - I drink espresso and they can't even sell good coffee, never mind music smile

But I'm right behind you on the physical CD thing - I don't want some crappy mp3 release. I still don't rate the NPGMC albums as being proper releases, so I want bright, shiny discs with lossless music and the associated questionable cover art.

Wallmart knows it has the market that all vendors drool over, so they demand deep discounts from any vendor to stock their products.
You will notice a lot of major brand name products missing at your local Walmart because some vendors choose not to play the deep discount game with them.
