Lovesexy: classic or rubbish?

Personally, I think Lovesexy is a bit overrated by the fans. Anna Stesia is one the best Prince songs ever, but the rest of the album doesn't measure up for the most part. The songs on Lovesexy can be divided into three categories:

Great:

Anna Stesia
Alphabet St
Glam Slam

MOR:

I Wish U Heaven
When 2 R In Love

Weak:

Lovesexy
Positivity
Eye No
Dance On

Do three great songs make a great album? Not quite, in my opinion. Still, the fifteen minutes of aural bliss from Alphabet St to Anna Stesia make it essential. The album as a whole is no classic, though. Please discuss...

End.

In my opinion, 1999, Lovesexy and The Rainbow Children are Prince's greatest albums. The only weak track (well it's not really weak, but it doesn't fit the album that well) is When 2 R In Love. The rest of it is 40 minutes of Prince at his most creative and playfull. Tracks like eye No, Dance On and Lovesexy on first listening may sound like standard Prince/Funk tunes, but there is just so much more to them. Glam Slam and Anna Stesia! (enough said). I Wish U Heaven and Positivity are just beautiful. The whole album should be listened to on a good pair of headphones to get the most out of it.

It depends what you like, Peter. If you want subtlety, spirituality and message, then 'Alphabet Street', 'Anna Stesia' and 'Positivity' will be great for you.

If you want funk, then 'Dance On', 'Eye No' and 'Lovesexy' will be great. If you want melody, then 'I Wish U Heaven' and 'Glam Slam' will be great. You catch my drift?

In other words, one reason why Prince is genius is that he can cover so many styles, and cover each brilliantly. Just like he can play many instruments, and play each brilliantly. This is what separates the maestro from the grand-maestro.

OK,
I get the distinct impression that rather than having any Prince albums, our freind Peter is just trying to piss people off with inane opinions.
I'd hate to waste my time flaming such a complete moron who has such an obviuos lack of both intelligence, and more importantly, musical taste.
Therfore, I choose to ignore his ridiculous threads

Oh, and by the way, each track is a masterpiece on its own, but the beauty will only be found by listening to the whole album at once.
This period of time brought the best out of Prince. Not only do you get Lovesexy, but the Lovesexy tour, the Small Club and other aftershows and to a lesser extent the Black album.
Prince in his prime recording his best stuff.

Shouldn't you put the title track Lovesexy in the great list and glam slam in the weak list?

I absolutely agree with this. The other songs are pretty weak though. Glam Slam and Lovesexy are awful and two of Prince's worst for me.

I like the album, but don't listen to it in its entirety as much as SOTT, which, to me, is P at his finest.

YES...and it was very misleading in 1988 when I bought the CD (still have the original, too!). It had an oval sticker on it that read "Songs are in a continuous sequence." I thought, "What in the hell does that mean?" Soon, it became perfectly clear what it meant:

"This is the first CD that's more difficult to fast forward through than a cassette."

I made my own tracked version about 6 months ago.

Every song on this record is a CLASSIC! It should've been up there with "Purple Rain"

Lovesexy is a classic. It's Prince at his most bold, Prince at his most relevant and Prince at his most ecstatic.

Really, Moonbeam? I think SOTT is Prince at his most bold, relevant and ecstatic. Social commentary (SOTT), gender benders (the "Camille" voice"), abusive funk (shut up already), quirky psychadelia (Starfish and Coffee, Play in the Sunshine), religion (The Cross), the only officially released live track for a good period of time (Beautiful Night), incredible soul (Adore), jazz (I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man), sex (It)...

I just think Prince painted such a broad picture with SOTT that no other album reaches.

But who the hell am I kidding...I like Lovesexy, too. smile

Shit, that must've been annoying. U mean just 1 track so u had to fast-forward? That's really crap.

When did they start to make the CD with separate tracks?

I never knew.

Yeah... one fucking track...

The non-American versions of the disc have been tracked all along from what I understand. I could be VERY wrong, but I have a German version that is tracked.

DAMN. Well, I bought my copy in England. It's fine. But who really thought that putting it all on one track would be a good idea?

Silly question I guess. lol

Purchased mine in Netherlands, just a tiny bit non-American version smile back in 1988 and it is tracked as in it has one track. Brilliant idea and enjoy listening to it all the way as it is supposed to!

Lovesexy is not a classic: there has never been an album like it.

So far Lovesexy is a genre on its own - a category with only one album yet...

Diva is right... the words Lovesexy and rubbish should never appear in the same sentence, paragraph, hell even book. Except of course when you want to mention that Lovesexy is not rubbish at all big grin

Now run and tell yo mamma about that!

I agree. I bought "Lovesexy" the day it came out and I STILL don't really rate it - mind you, after "Sign OTT", ANYTHING would have been a disappointment.
