Someone is bound to come along and pull it apart looking for inconsistencies in my opinion, but all I can say is I know when I hear something I don't like, and usually, what I don't like is laziness and artifice. Not artifice in terms of anything synthesized, or "manufactured pop", but in terms of gimmicky band-wagon jumping and trend chasing, which is what I hear on Rave/Musicology and 3121 and a lot of the NPGMC stuff. superspaceboy said: Maybe a better question would be...what have you liked and loved since Emancipation. I am really curious as I have read about some of the music you find terrible i.e. ICP&C and Black Sweat that I think are Classics. I like a lot of stuff since 1996 off the top of my head: New World, We Gets Up (!), Dreamin About U, all of TRC, most of ONA (Piano), a little of The Truth, C-Note, Xpectation, NEWS, Judas Kiss, When I Lay My Hands On U, most of NPS, If I Was The Man In Ur Life, most of Planet Earth, Crimson & Clover. I think that's quite a lot tbh, there's more I DO like than I don't looking at it. I don't try to purposely be obtuse, NBALM has all the qualities above I don't like in Prince's post-WB output. I like to think Prince can do better than a lot of his recent output. So I'll keep looking in the sewers for that diamond ring someone dropped down the toilet because I do keep finding the odd one, and still believe there's more to find.... somewhere! BTW, I'll give you Black Sweat, but calling ICP&C a classic is stretching it to say the least. I agree wit everything you said Nouveau dance. Artificial trend chasing and lazy songwriting I KNOW my man can do betta!! Hope he listen to the voices of reason from folks who know good music and quits makin tracks like this. Enough already, we done heard this a million times. Motivation to bring it harder than that. WORD.

It's so frustrating. There are so many poor Prince songs coming out all at once that there doesn't seem time enough to sufficiently trash them all individually. It's upsetting me.

It's really kind of funny, this song reaches back into some old Prince sounds. It really sounds like something that fell right off of Musicology to me.
What is funny, though, is ACDC puts out albums and they have never changed their sound, and people like that, and expect that. We simply will not tolerate Prince sounding the same. strange.... huh.... We are all so full of here

when you start laxing standards , and everything is good enough because its the nice thing to say, Bridges start collapsing, unqualified people become president based on their fathers name, your milk will contain too much melamine and your kids will choke on their toys, or music like this. who uses the word "bilge"?

that word was more original than the song. [Edited 1/13/09 22:27pm]

I'm about to do something that's probably tantamount to blasphemy on this board, but I think it's necessary to prove a point that people are over-analyzing this song to death:
I say this because people are trying to find a legitimate reason to condemn 'Never B Another' and I don't think they need one. Just say you don't like it and move on. You don't need to find some validation for why you dislike it. We all love Alphabet St. It's a great song. Awesome, jammin' stuff. But the lyrics are completely insipid and make little to no sense. Look at these lyrics: No! I'm going down 2 Alphabet Street I'm gonna crown the first girl that I meet I'm gonna talk so sexy She'll want me from my head 2 my feet Yeah, yeah, yeah Yes she will Yeah, yeah, yeah (Yeah) Yeah, yeah, yeah I'm gonna drive my daddy's Thunderbird (My daddy's thunderbird) A white rad ride, '66 ('67) so glam it's absurd I'm gonna put her in the back seat And drive her 2 ... Tennessee Yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah, Tennessee Yeah, yeah, yeah, drive her Excuse me, baby I don't mean 2 be rude But I guess tonight I'm just not, I'm just not in the mood So if U don't mind (Yeah, yeah, yeah) I would like to...watch Yeah, yeah, yeah...can I? Yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah (Can I, can I, can I, can I) We're going down, down, down, if that's the only way 2 make this cruel, cruel world hear what we've got to say Put the right letters together and make a better day Yeah, yeah, yeah, better days Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's O-O-K Yeah, yeah, yeah Maybe it's the only way Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Cat, we need U 2 rap Cat, we need U 2 rap Don't give 2 us slow Cause we know U know New Power Soul Gotta gotta gotta go! Talk 2 me lover Come on tell me what U taste Didn't your mama tell U Life is 2 good 2 waste? (Put your love down) Didn't she tell U That Lovesexy was the glam of them all? If U can hang, U can trip on it U surely won't fall (Put your love down) No side effects and The feeling last 4-ever Straight up - it tastes good It makes U feel clever (Put your love down) U kiss your enemies Like U know U should Then U jerk your body Like a horny pony would (Put your love down) U jerk your body like a horny pony would Now run and tell your mama about that! And while U're at it tell your papa about this Yeah-yeah Put your love down there when u wanna get shot No! (Yeah, yeah) Put your love down there when u wanna get shot Put your love down there when u wanna get shot Put your love down there when u wanna get shot Put your love down there... Get home, Alphabet Street No! L-L-L-L-Lovesexy Yea, Oh, Alphabet Street Yea, Oh, Alphabet Street A B C D E F H I love U I'm not deriding 'Alphabet Street'. Again, I love this song. But to try and get high and mighty about they lyrics to 'Never B Another' is a little silly. I've put one example of nonsense lyrics from a song the vast majority of us love, and I'm sure that there are at least a dozen more that could be posted if we wanted. Just don't like the song if you don't like the song. You don't have to validate your opinion by attacking the song. I don't like '4ever' that much, but other people seem to love it. Whatevs. Different strokes I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

'We Can Funk' is another example I could cite of lyrics. I love this song, may be my favorite Prince song, though that seems to alternate a lot, but it's in the top 3 no matter what. That being said... We Can Funk I'm testing postive 4 the funk I'll gladly pee in anybody's cup and when your cup overflow I'll pee some more Seriously. Someone here has complained of him talking about checking his email. Someone else complained about the use of the word 'spinach.' But 'We Can Funk' is another song most of us love, and the chorus talks about peeing in a cup. And then peeing some more. Just...wow. I'm speaking specifically of the words used. Like no one complains about Prince talking about a 'white rad ride' or 'jerking your body like a horny pony would.'
Maybe we're more forgiving because the song's got great innuendo and is a lot catchier? I don't know. The point is we love lots of Prince songs with whatever kind of lyrics for whatever reason. I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

I agree with you. I know it's very "by-the-numbers" Prince, but for whatever reason, I'm still enjoying it more than most people seem to be. You're right about listening to it in the car, also. (Maybe that's why he's been previewing it for reporters in his car?) I was about to say the same thing: I listened to this joint veryyy loud and I rediscovered and really dug the title!!!!! I just can't get into this song either. It's an unfortunate reminder, to me, of the Undisputed/Hot Wit U sound of Rave. Sounds like he just mixed those two songs and came up with that. Plus, what in the hell is up with the auto tune effect?? God, must he follow the damn herd, too? Geesh!!
