superspaceboy said: I do like this song...and I don't really get the hate for it. The only thing that bothers me about it (though very little) is the Woooo at the beginning. It's sort of like he's thinking..."I need to evoke the Revolution sound...Oh here I'll just add this Wooooo". I am also tired of the self Grandstanding Lyric that he seems to be stuck on.
It's been hard for me to Connect to his music completely lately as the Lyrics to his songs are either laden with religious innuendos I don't get or is about how good he is or how beautiful his home is or how great a party he threw is. See, that´s exactly what I´ve been saying for some time now. People can´t really relate to his lyrics the way the used to in the past. While his lyrics have always been quite personal and still are to this day, it seems that they are either getting a bit too cryptic or he just brags and boasts about this and that. Beautiful Ones, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Adore, Forever In My Life were also very personal lyrics, yet accessible by a lot of people, which is probably what makes a good song great. These days, even the hardcore fans have a hard time trying to decipher the things he sings about. [Edited 1/13/09 9:04am] " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! The chorus and the lyrics are basically what's "awful" about it to my ears. It is indeed rather NPGMC-ish and no song should ever contain the word "spinach" in it (just try to prove me otherwise). But yeah, I do have to say that a couple of times playing the new songs it was the one that I found myself humming alone afterwards. Yes, that awful chorus in fact.

Prince is going to a party and there'll be an old flame there, he wants to make her jealous. She's apparently gone back and forth with their relationship, she's put on some weight, but he doesn't care. He wants her to know that they're the same, she even said so, so why are they wasting all this time? There's never going to be another like him - someone that fits her so well. Seriously, what's there to get? OH, and for those that don't like it - you can always hit NEXT on your stereo or music player. Pretty simple. I hear songs like this and the first thing that goes through my head is 'What prompted him to write it?'
The lyrics are descriptive. None of us knows what happens in this man's life on a daily basis. Where he goes, what he does, who he talks to, etc. So when people come at a Prince song as if it's just nonsense, I just shake my head. I don't think there's a lick of nonsense to it at all. Maybe he met up with an old lover and this song popped into his head. Maybe someone in the band attended a party where an old girlfriend was hanging out and they told the story to Prince. Maybe it's how a married couple that's near and dear to him finally got together after years of cat and mouse. Who knows. But thinking about it is lots of fun. Paints a world to build a story around. You can listen to it as 'Oh, that Linn drum again. I don't like this sampled part. Ugh, the word spinach? What's he thinking?' I'm not going to begin to tell Prince I know better than he does. The fact that so many people do like this song proves that it has merit. You can say that about all of his material - SOMEONE here loves the song you hate the most, and vice versa. Usually he's not specific, like here, where he's ambiguous as to who he's talking about exactly, but no matter the song, he's giving us some sort of insight. That's the beauty of art - it's a piece of the artist themselves. Songs like this are what always confound me about Prince. He consistently lets us hear this kind of stuff along with his much better and inspired work. I guess he doesn't want us to take for granted the better songs, so he lets us know how great they are by comparison to far inferior work! lol
It's either that, or maybe he wants us to appreciate a work in progress before he puts his polish on it and makes it ready for mass consumption. I remember hearing the early versions of Gett Off and We Can Funk before they were "upgraded" and being completely unimpressed, and of course now I love them both. Who knows what the hell he's thinking ... lol

My guess is that some ppl just can't understanding why he's singin so simple and not deep and cryptic as he normally would. It's just a simple song, simple words, simple sentences about a simple thing as waking up and gettin ready to go to the club and assuring a woman that he's irreplaceable.
As for the music, I can't judge on if it's good or bad cause I don't kno much bout the workings and ins and outs and abouts of music, but it sure sounds good to me I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

exactly. i don't have a closet to walk into and pick something to wear either. and like you, i don't rub my head with olive oil but it's just great when he sings it in that bragging slightly auto tuned vocal, lol. people need to chill and sit the fck down. three albums on the way and still fools jumping up and down making threads about "i don't think we will like this" or "i already hate that". the hate in this place is being spread very thin indeed now that those mf's already discard something before they even heard it. anyway, do i care? nope. gonna listen to the song right now and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
