Chaos & Disorder is better than Planet Earth I never bought Chaos & Disorder. I missed it when it came out, and by the time I got around to buying it, I'd read pretty much everywhere that it was crap and useless.
So, I never got around to it. I figured it'd just be another disc of uninspired Prince music. In my Prince Listening Rediscovery Adventure 2009, I finally got to listening...and I'm actually surprised. 1) This truly has some of his best guitar work since Purple Rain. I never expected this at all. Some of it's truly rocking. Nothing extremely memorable as far as solos go, but truthfully, Prince may be a great guitar player, but he's not a great soloist. His solos don't stand out like say, those of Slash or Jerry Cantrell or any other rock & roll artist you're thinking of. 2) It's not nearly as bad as everyone said it was. Some of these tracks are better than stuff off Parade or Around the World in a Day. I never expected that. 3) The guitar work, especially on 'I like it there' is damn good. Very, very clean at times, very hard-rocking at others, and without that trademark special brand of distortion that Prince puts on a lot of his guitar work. 'I like it there' stands beside songs like 'Endorphine Machine' and 'Guitar' without a problem - and matches them, in my opinion. 4) The overall tone/feel/attitude of this album reminds me of Planet Earth, except - better. In general, I'm going to be honest and say that Chaos & Disorder is actually more enjoyable than Planet Earth. I'm sad it took me this long to experience it. I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

it's not hard to trump planet earth... it has a polish to it, but once you get underneath thing shine... it's a load of steaming crap [Edited 1/10/09 13:06pm]

Prince told the Chicago Sun Times that they wanted to see how hard and fast they could bring the album out, and it has a feel that I appreciate, very rocking and frantic, lots of energy and character to those songs. It is a true statement to Princes diversity that Emancipation followed only a few months after this, they sound nothing alike in any way.
As far as comparing it to Planet Earth I like to judge albums on their on terms, but I do see a pattern, I think Prince has a way of putting out one album that is meant to entertain on one level, all the while he plans on creating a "bigger" album that he hopes will blow you away om a different level. I really like "Chaos & Disorder," I think the whole album is great...
The only song that ever bothered me lyrically was, "Dig U better dead," only because of the subject matter...as if Prince was threatened, yet the song is good. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

The two albums are similar but I think Planet Earth is the better of the two.
Planet Earth Doesn't have anything nearly as bad as Right The Wrong on it and Chaos doesn't have anything on it nearly as good as The 1 U Wanna C. [Edited 1/10/09 13:18pm]

See...already we have some people saying 'Obviously' and other's saying 'No way!'
Very funny :p I'd just heard that it was his WORST album, and I don't think it is by any means. I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

Very funny :p . ? when you put this much material out.. you are gonna have this with just about any artist. Yes, he is prolific.. but this doesn't just happen with prince.. it happens to a lot of artists that have a tiniest bit of diversity in their music. [Edited 1/10/09 13:30pm]

Very funny :p I'd just heard that it was his WORST album, and I don't think it is by any means. I've always enjoyed C & D especially the title track. 'Right The Wrong' considering the options, a poor choice for an album track but the '1 U want 2 C' is also a poor choice as is most of PE. I understand the sentiment of the title track but maybe he should have released a Planet Earth EP. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Chaos & Disorder was ok to me. I like it much better than I did when it came out, but I think Planet Earth is much better. I don't understand what's so bad about Planet Earth. I think it was the best thing that came out in 07. I don't think it's one of his best, but I think it's a far cry from crap.

I'm not a fan of either song, actually. I think 'The 1 U Wanna C' is poor in its own right. I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

When Chaos and Disorder came out my only thing was that it sounded so basic. I had heard 'Dinner With Delores' and was expecting some type of Parade era SOTT vibe to it. To this day I only listen to the first 5 songs or so, but yeah Chaos is great and to me at least better than Planet Earth by far.

I really think the only reason people think C&D was crap is because it was the follow-up to The Gold Experience, and frankly, in comparison to TGE, then yeah, it's lacking. But, honestly, it fits well into his body of work and has some gems on it. I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! I LOVE the 1st half of C&D...from the title track to Zanalee...great flow. I don't thing Right the Wrong is THAT bad. However, the track that stops the whole thing in its tracks for me is I Rock Therefore I Am...that thing sucks monkey balls.
Not a fan of Planet Earth at all.

I 2 brought Chaos and Disorder recently and with listening 2 fans saying how shit it was on here, kinda in a way made me appreciate alot more simply because I listened 2 it with very low- expectations...AND WAS BLOWN AWAY! the same thing happened with Come and I loved that 2! I was told what an "amazing" album Lovesexy was and that I should buy it. So I listened 2 it with very high expectations...and thought it was a load of shit (apart from Anna Stesia and I wish U Heaven) [Edited 1/10/09 17:06pm] Everybody's looking 4 the ladder

Chaos and Disorder pretty much rules - There are a few bummers on there, but for the most part, it's surprisingly good.
And it's much better than Planet Earth. I've seen the future, and boy it's rough...

the funny thing is that most of the "Chaos" opinions are based on its timing and the fact that it came out didnt sell, no singles for the most part, and despite him doing 4 videos only 1 aired. But if he did this album after Purple Rain than it would have been a million seller and people would be looking at it as genius.
I have never had a problem with this record, it has a cut or two that i dont like, but all in all i like this album. Tracks like "Into the light" "I will" and the strongest rock guitar from Prince in a long time. I like the rawness of the record, the absence of the slick production that would take over on Emancipation and NEw Power Soul. It seemed like Prince went away from Guitar being prevelant on the albums at least until the Rainbow Children. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

PE and C&D are different animals, I usually compare it with the Gold experience. I agree with your review about C&D I got it back then and Loved it the most since PR. T
he media Killed this CD they dumped on it before it was even heard and Prince didn't want it to sell will either because it was under WB contract. PE has it's moment but I don't listen to this alltheway through like I can C&D. Lets compare efferts "Princified" means something we'd expect from him "Classic" means something we all Like "Formula" means a sound he used already "Accpetable" means average prince "Chaos and Disorder" Acceptable "I Like It There" Classic "Dinner with Delores" Princified "The Same December" Formula "Right the Wrong" Acceptable "Zannalee" Classic "I Rock, Therefore I Am" Rosie & Fake shabba made it Corny "Into the Light" Princified "I Will" Princified "Dig U Better Dead" Commercial Corny "Had U" Princified "Planet Earth" Princified "Guitar" Formula "Somewhere Here on Earth" Classic "The One U Wanna C" Commercial Corny "Future Baby Mama" Acceptable "Mr. Goodnight" Acceptable "All the Midnights in the World" Formula "Chelsea Rodgers" can you do the funky chicken? "Lion of Judah" Formula "Resolution" Formula Chaos & Disorder is more sincere to the Prince body of History. We all want a big hit again because
we want to relive the Hysteria & Pandemonium we experienced when Purple Rain was Hot. Actually, he doesn't care if it happens again or not.

Maybe I just look at Prince different than some of you. I've read in this thread a few times about how bad people find 'Right the Wrong' but, man, I like the song.
It would *never* play on the radio. It could *never* be a hit, but as a Prince fan, I love it. I love hearing him having fun, playing around with something really weird. Seriously - who the hell else would mix together: country, the Doors, big band, funk and rock & roll into one song? No one. Prince. I love it. This album has some of the best guitar work of the Man's career. Zannalee is straight up blues.
