The more I hear the new stuff, the less enthralled I am. There is nothing that excites me quite like a good new Prince song, so this is very disappointing.

Crimson & Clover is the best of the bunch, which is sad considering it's a cover. The guitar and vocal effects are wonderfully executed.

Let's start with the worst, which is undoubtedly the dreadful Another Like Me. Contrived canned beats and self-effacing egotism? An insincere attempt at sounding hip and fun? Why, it's the unwanted return of late 90's Prince!

Forever follows not too far behind with some of the most uninspired romantic generalities Prince has ever written. To top it off, it has a lazy hook for a chorus and a one-dimensional overall sound. Prince has had a multitude of romances, including two marriages, and yet he has nothing profound or even interesting to say on the topic. Amazing.

Wall of Berlin has a catchy rhythm to its chorus and some lyrically interesting moments but is otherwise pedestrian in its come-ons. Likewise, the guitar work, while technically impressive, lacks any memorable hooks to merit repeated listens.

Colonized Mind has fittingly somber guitar and builds to a nice climax of frustration, but the lyrics nearly kill it. The major problem is that Prince thinks he's being a lot more insightful than he really is. The messages here are embarrassingly mundane. We need God, democracy only entails limited freedoms, etc., etc. These are the pontifications of a religious teenager who just took his first political science course.

Give P a phone I'm sure he could do with your 'expert' opinion...who knows maybe you could return him to superstardom.....he has far too many yes men behind him, he needs someone like you to put him straight. Send him your resume...who knows?

Co-Sign. How did Prince manage all these years without the gudeince of PurpleKnight (LOL)

I just heard three of princes new songs, the crimson & clover is good, but the other two im not too thrilled about.
In my opinion,i feel like prince is moving away from funk / poppy radio music, and from all the recent stuff on the radio, i would too.
Yea, he is maturing in music and there is nothing worng with that, but for me, i like his live and after concert performances, his guitar playing and such ,but right now his music aint doin it for me.
Im still a prince fan!

After 11 years of hearing slow jam singles, weak attempts of pop radio friendly AOR songs, "James Brown lite" crap and formulatic drum programming, these new songs are refreshing.

I liked Musicology, loved N.E.W.S. and dug the Rainbow Children. The music on those CD's are tight and organic. It also sounds like real instruments are being played (Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, real bass, real guitars, etc).

I hope the rest of "Lotus" is in that tradition. We'll see.

It will be..

These are cool songs for a 50+ year-old....

Frankly I am not excited at all by this new Prince material, and I am truly sad I am not. It is OK, but it just gives me zero emotion.

Perhaps i am no longer a Prince fan, I don't know. I have this weird feeling that I heard all of these songs before in various albums, and none of them brings any novelty. None of them will ever be a classic or even attract new audiences....
