ProTools is an editing piece of software for music. It's used by MOST producers and musicians. Apparently Prince was a hold-out for some reason.

From what I could gather, it was because he didn't like people (read T-Pain) who used it to cover up their crappy singing voices, because certain filters will allow you to retune someone's voice, just like you can an instrument.

Prince apparently thinks it's all cool now, cause he's doing some of that Cher/T-Pan modulation on his voice in There Will Never Be Another Like Me.
I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

It's used for all of music. It puts tracks together.

There's definitely some sort of autotune used on parts of 3121 (the album)- Protools again I reckon (certainly some sort of computer software involved). So maybe not such a new thing him using the software then smile

OK I just wanted to clear this up about autotune - it is a plug in (VST or RTA) that can be installed on any sequencer and system (not just pro tools), he could have used it with Cubase, live, Logic, etc. Pro tools is different as it comes with hardware, soundcard mixer, etc and depending on which version you use you can get pristine sound and quality from it.

Its the audio engine of choice for most pro´s so Im suprised he hasnt used it yet to mix his audio. from the sound of the Lotusflower website, the new stuff is gonna sound fucking hot - maybe he listened to all those people out there who criticised the very poor recordings of Planet Earth after all.

The first time I recall seeing Pro Tools mentioned in credits was TRC.

so far, the pro-tools talk hasn't brought anything to his music differently from the samples we've heard.. only thing it has brought is his relevance to the music we are currently hearing on the radio waves.. which is sad.

Lets hope the rest brings something interesting..

So if most/many musicians have been using pro-tools, then what are the innovative recording techniques Prince was mentioning in a recent interview [I think the LAT one]? Any ideas among the music pros among us? I'm curious.
