The album wasn't as spectacular as the tour. The tour got a lot of extremely well-deserved hype. Doesn't necessarily mean the album was over-hyped. shrug

He's wrong. I was listening to it today in my car and I was consistently amazed at how great it is.

There are a few lame tracks, but man, the bulk of it - just great freakin' stuff!
I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

Musicology is not that good

There are elements of good songs, but overall its about as good as the front cover.

i don't remember the actual album getting a whole lot of attention. i think it was just prince in general - the tour, the RNRHOF, the grammy appearance, etc. - that brought him tons of well-deserved hype. he was all over the place in 2004. i wasn't mad at him!

i was fine with the album. i wasn't amazed by it but i did enjoy it a lot that summer. i still have extra discs laying around from those shows, cuz i ran out of people to give my extras to who either hadn't already gone to a show or who were even moderately interested in hearing the new prince album. shrug

I don't know about it being OVER-hyped but it was alittle hyped. But it was a least better than his last two albums. Meaning PE and 3121.
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

musicology wasnt overhyped at all...thats a ridiculous statement...the only prince album i can think of that was waaay overhyped was.....(and this is a very good album) Emancipation. Given that said emancipation is one of my favorites actually but the hype behind it was just ridiculous.

It was overhyped. Amidst all the joy of seeing Prince re-emerge to the mass public, Musicology was hyped as a return to form simply because Prince managed to avoid making an album bad enough to detract from his greatest hits tour.

There is absolutely nothing memorable about the album. It is probably his safest, most boring work ever.

Purple Knight, you have a point there... lol

The musical critics did gave up on Prince in the second half of the nineties when he was 'serving' plastic, uninspired funk on auto-pilot on his website, and albums like New Power soul, Rave and utterly forgotteble material that later turned up on 'albums' like The Slaughterhouse.

Next to that they did see through the 'ugly coupling' of boring seventies jazz-rock and the brainwashed lyrics by some quasi-religious lunatic on 'The Rainbow Children'.

They did see it, too many so called 'Prince-fans' in here didnt. They still consider 'The Rainbow Children' as some ignored masterpiece, which it simply isnt. It one of the worst albums Prince did put out in his entire career, qualitywise it belongs in the same category as New Power Soul.

After selfindulgent 3 CD-albums (wether its new material like Emancipation, or old material like The Crystal Ball) and Prince more and more obscuring himself from the rest of the world, with his website and his annoying 'slave-tag' i think the critics at least considered Musicology as a 'turning piece', an album that was showing Prince getting at grasp with himself again.

I think they considered Musicology as an album that was mostly rid of those kind of eccentric flaws that Prince showed during the second half of the nineties: it was a little, compact album focusing on the the individual songs again. Therefore it did get rated rather 'high'.

But i agree with Purple Knight that it is a safe, boring album. It is like Prince thought, hey, they consider me eccentric, out of touch with reality, how can i deliver an album that doesnt offend?

And that is what it is IMO: Prince using one/third of his capacities to create an album that doesnt offend or 'wringe', but that doesnt inspire and motivate at the same time.
A mediocre 'safe haven' to 'sell' a new tour. Calculated, unoffensive middle of the road stuff.

I think Musicology is solid enough but rather bland. 3121 is a more enjoyable album for me, personally. PE is just a mess, starts out great then falls apart.
