Prince and The Family. I don't know how many of you use Twitter, or even know what it is, but Wendy just made an update to the account that her and Lisa share, saying that Prince had just phoned Susannah, and that the reason might be to do with name 'The Family' being used for the new album that Susannah, Eric, Paul, Jellybean and Jerome are doing, and that he may not let them use it.
Hopefully that isn't the case, I think they should be allowed to use the name. Unless of course Prince was planning to ressurect the project himself with new members.....but I doubt he would do that! Besides that, Willie Nelson's band was called "The Family" (Willie Nelson and The Family) before "The Family" was called "The Family." So maybe they should clear it with him as well? | |

It's Prince's "house" ...his property. See, that's what I was pondering. We really don't know if Prince and St. Paul are on civil terms. They may never have buried the hatchet since Paul left the band the first time around. Paul's brother Ricky played keys on 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World', but that may not mean a great deal. |

Yeah that is a bummer but not suprising coming from Prince.
But at this point Wendy is only speculating this and we see before this confirmed. I didnt even know Prince still keep contact with Susannah as I always got the impression she tried to distance himself from him over the years, and I am awared that he continues to contact Wendy and Lisa. I would thought that Prince okay the project, otherwise St.Paul and Susannah wouldnt spending all this time talking about the album and it seem to me their intentions of releasing it. And I thought with Prince is still on good terms with some of the Time members too in the band particularly Jerome and Jellybean as far as I know he would okay the project since just about the band members are the Time leftover or still continues to play for that band. UPDATE:
Wendy said on the twitter that Prince wanted Susannah and the others in the band to stop using the Family name. So from the way it looks there wont be a the Family album.  That is shame but on the other hand I wondered did St. Paul and Susannah had contact Prince and ask for his blessing before they even record the album and did some bit of promotion?[Edited 1/8/09 17:53pm] | |

It might not be a bad idea to construct a new band identity with a different name. Something to show there growth with a link to the past.
Does the name really have that much "brand recognition" or value anymore? Unless they are just trying to capitalize on a few novelty venues and markets. | |

Their Myspace page has been changed to read "Family 2.0".

CaseyRain is me, for anyone wondering. Feel free to follow me on Twitter, I see that some of you already have judging by the emails I got this morning. I do agree Bart, but like Wendy says.....it's P's call. I wonder if he has given The Time permission being as Jimmy said they were doing a new album too.....the difference is that whenever he's fallen out with those guys, they've always patched it up. There certainly doesn't appear to be any chance of that happening with Paul... if it hasn't happened in the last 25 years, I doubt it will any time soon. |

The Time, Flyte Tyme, The Original Time, Morris Day and The Time... it doesn't matter the fans love them, want to see and hear them and will support them no matter what. With or without Prince.
The Family will get a lot of love and support at their shows from us as well. Next he'll tell Sheila to drop the E. Sheila, Carmen, Appolonia, Wendy And Lisa, The Family, and The Time should tour together. They would make bank. And Prince knows it. | |
