Leading off with a cover? Do you think it is smart to lead off with a cover. It didn't work for
Emancipaton. But I think leading off Lotus Flower with Crimson and Clover (a very familiar track), which is a fantastic cover is a very smart thing to do. Especially if he does some live performances of it to promote the album. I do think it has a chance to hit on radio. I've got a guitar that can part the sea.

The only problem I see is if that is the best song on the album... crickets will be a chirpin.

That is a potential problem. I think it is the strongest of the tracks previewed so far. Hopefully, there are some hidden gems that we have not heard. If not, Prince's present songwriting abilities will certainly be questioned even more. Not a good thing. I've got a guitar that can part the sea.

Dunno what you mean by "leading off" though.
It hasn't been released as a single and it was just one of four tracks previewed from the album, so I'd hardly call that "leading off". If you're talking about the album itself, it's not the opening track either.

Although the fact that it is the song playing when you open up the website does indicate that it could very well be the lead-off single. Nothing is for certain though. I don't understand why people are so 'anti covers' these days. Some of the most inspired music you'll ever hear are cover versions. Many of the great jazz artists - people like Louis Armstrong, Miles, Coltrane etc. made their name by reinterpreting the popular songs of the day. Prince always puts his own spin on things when he covers a song so I have no problem with him leading off (if that is in fact what he's doing) with "Crimson". We all know he can write a good song.. but his recording output in recent years has shown us that he can't translate it in the studio as well as he used to. I'm not suggesting do things the old way, but the songs lack production values. Having said that, He does seem to create a good few that are worth listening to.. but overall, it's apparent to me as the songs get older, they have no timeless qualities to them. It's easy for someone as talented as Prince to whip up a nice cover, because it's all laid out and the hook has proven success. We just need for prince to write a few himself.

You never know, the songs that were previewed might not even be on the new cd's. He might surpprise everyone with songs that were not heard instead, and leave the ones that were heard off, accept for Crimson & Clover, because as was said,it is playing on the website. You just never know.... Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. ~Berthold Auerbach
