...and also, with "Fury", it became nearly impossible 4 people 2 separate them, and just treat them as different performances, or even renditions.

The live version is pure FIRE... a volcano of Prince.

The studio version is cooler... less impassioned, but perfect in it's near 'Dirty Mind' album vocal delivery.

What?!

Don't mention Dirty Mind in the same breath as the weak studio version of 'Fury', cause that was shit and i don't agree with the comparison at all. The SNL version is awesome, i agree, but Prince's problem is he overproduces at times. Seemed like trying to get the keyboard riff on Fury to sound like 1999 was more important to him than the guitar sounding great.

the video version of fury was pretty hot, seems like he acknowledged the complaints, but i don't have that, and that pisses me off.

The heck if I know, all I know is that being in the same room with him is pure magic and I'd take that over just listening to him thru my earpnones. I think he can cast his spell over an audience easier when he's present. biggrin

Average is a relative term. When compared to HIMSELF, I guess on occasion Prince seems average; Black Sweat, studio vs live; 3121, studio vs live; no contest!

I believe, (though I could be wrong) most of us here first fell in love with a Prince song recorded in a studio, not necessarily performed live. And for all those above us mere mortals, I note there are always exceptions... smile

who's better in the studio? Bob George, Housequake, 3121, Irresistible Bitch, When Will We Be Paid, High, The One you Wanna See, Come ...

Is that just "average" on the genre bending/hopping creativity level?

Oh I remember that vividly. People here were so sure the CD version was going to be just like the live one on SNL and i knew that wasn't going to be the case. I even warned people not to expect the same kind of version and sure enough, almost 3 years later (amazing right there), people are still mad that the 3121 version of "Fury" didn't sound like SNL. As for me, I dig both versions. I'm glad I had the insight to not set myself up for disappointment like that. As a result, I let Fury play on my iPod when it pops up. music

That's a great point both of you made. When I saw "Fury" on SNL, I couldn't believe how much Prince shut all the guitaristas up. It was a brief but spectacular display of his musicianship. Singing, playing guitar, soloing, dancing, all from the same guy in a five minute song, LIVE. It was great.

When I saw the video, I thought...man, what a different vibe...

Perfect Example of how good Prince is CD Version and Live Version the same song but miles apart but both are great....the vibe is always a step up...very hard to do but Prince can do this and he knows it...
I'll put money on it Prince could redo any song of his live and make it ten times better than on the record...hate to see what he would do with a sampler going through his old stuff he could remix the wax of it.. lol lol
Da, Da, Da....Emancipation....Free..don't think I ain't..! London 21 Nights...Clap your hands...you know the rest..
James Brown & Michael Jackson RIP, your music still lives with us!

Because...

Prince OVER THINKS when he records! He Over-Produces every track.. music comes to easy for him so for him he gets bored just playing, he thinks he needs to put all those stupid noises and artsy producing tricks.

Pssssst...

Prince

JUST PLAY!

Just play live sounding tracks, I know you will probably if you did that suggestion make 5,000+ songs a year... BUT that is what sounds the best!

Play long guitar solos!

The End
cool
