Or like the embarrassing vocal mask on Incense and Candles? Nothing like trying to keep up with Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears in the production game. that is true. with all due respect to the man...Prince always says something like "MTV doesn't play good songs like they used 2" blah blah...but, it sure as hell sounds like he's listening to the production going on there, because he uses a lot of techniques found in straight out computer/loop vibes, where no instrument is involved. example: the pan whistle thing in black sweat [Edited 1/4/09 12:56pm] [Edited 1/4/09 12:57pm] Snare drum pound on the 2 & 4

It seems like he used those effects in the 80's mainly for fun and they worked. Now he's approaching music too seriously, I think he's trying to sound classic, and as a result his music is much more boring for me. Others might say that it sounds less convincing. i think the vocal effect on crimson is acceptable. gives the song almost an nostalgic atmosphere.
that another like me song, well hmm.. not only is it terrible, but he has an obvious auto tune on his voice that makes it even more irrelevant. horrible

I love that track. I just can't listen to it in conjunction with the other rock tracks. It belongs on a diff album and that's presumably what he's doing. Change it one more time..

Well, I wouldn't call it "irrelevant" or "horrible", but I do agree that the autotune is annoying. I've never understood the point of autotune - to me it limits yourself to the traditional 12 "in tune" notes of the octave and denies the subtlty of all the "inbetween" notes. Although in this particular case I don't think blue notes would have had a big impact on the song, because it's simply a beat-driven dance track.

^I see what you're saying. At least it's used as an effect and not to hide bad singing - for that I can overlook it. However I still find it somewhat distracting. Maybe I'm just getting old Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

Not at all! I think it's distracting too, I promise! Nah, seriously, a more "organic" sound would have fitted much better on that track. It would sound much more powerful and make it easier to get the message across. Like this it sounds and feels kinda lame. [Edited 1/4/09 14:07pm]

Rockability said: rap said: Um, what does that mean? means he is probably going to make all the music while sitting at a computer and keyboard. The real issue I have aside from the sterile sound is the copy and pasting of the lyrics. I know he's transposing the line a third down or something and copying it over. I don't know, Beyonce sounds good doing it, but perhaps his voice is to low to sound appealing with that method. Thanks!

I'm really pleased with his vocal treatments on the other cuts, however. I like the pitch bending on his voice in "Colonized Mind". "He's a musician's musician..."

ProTools is mostly 4 mastering... 'The Rainbow Children' was recorded on 2" tape, then mastered in ProTools. BIG, WARM sound. Even if U record analog, it must become digital, and ProTools is a mastering tool. He may be recording alot within roTools as well, but he's got a great team who knows how 2 emulate analog. From the new stuff we've heard, it sounds like he emulated a classic analog 220 volt studio within ProTools. It doesn't matter how he records. What matters is the end result. This is almost like complaining that he used a Wurlitzer or B3 model, instead of the real instruments. Of course, in that example, I prefer the real instruments, but the models can sound very good, if treated right. Have you noticed that all the usual dickheads who act like if they were real music connaisseurs on this board clearly avoided replying to you on your technical comments. Strange isn't it ?

Yeah, well... if U look at the Org as a whole, the percentage of posts about the technical and sonic aspects of music is probably around 11%, so I don't expect nor need any replies. It's all good. Maybe the fact that my "prediction" turned into reality about the two albums... one rock & one funk... has partially silenced the bashers. On that note, Wall's critical posts don't even bother me. Like everyone, he's entitled 2 his opinion, and he usually writes quite well. It was when he decided 2 attack me, and childishly call me "the black vanilla ice" and "Ali G", that I took offense. Not trusting me... that I am in the business, that I know some of what goes on in Prince's musical world, etc, is one thing, but baseless attacks don't get anyone anywhere. It's all good now, anyway, and I'll just keep on doing what I do here... Inform, Suggest, Challenge, Criticize, and Praise. PEACE. "He's a musician's musician..."

The others are very well recorded, and effected just right... at leat 2 my ear, through listening 2 crappy quality mp3s. They will SHINE in full CD/WAV/Vinyl quality. There is an obvious throwback sound going on, especially with several nods 2 Hendrix, that almost put U right on the 'Electric Ladyland' album. "There Will Never B Another Like Me" is dryer, more current sounding, with a musical throwback, in the LinnDrum AND some keyboard sounds that R reminiscent of his first 2 albums. Where this song doesn't move me, is in the lead synth line, and the vocal arrangement and melody. If those were changed, and it had either (or both) funk bass or guitar, it would SLAM. The groove, and all the synth parts (besides that lead line) R great. to everything you said. I'm really looking forward to the CD versions of the Lotus Flower songs, I want them to sound "wide" and slamming, right into ones head. Mixing the guitar solo in Crimson and Clover from left to right (gosh, how do you call doing that in English? Embarrassing! ) was a good idea already, I usually fall in love with these kind of things quite easily! [Edited 1/4/09 9:24am] if u listen 2 the guitar solo in joy in repetition, it's done the same way of mixing from left 2 right man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
