I'm wondering, if that's the case, wouldn't the majority of us be hypocrites in here? Im just trying to understand this better.
There are fans here who go on all the livelong day about how great Prince is, shouting down his distractors and yet see nothing wrong with obtaining his music or videos however they can. That is what I am I talking about.

Liking Prince and touting oneself as a fan then consuming bootlegs does NOT make one a hypocrit. It makes one someone who is willing to go to unethical or even illegal means to hear the music they want to hear.
One is a hypocrite if they rail against bootlegs and yet they still have bootlegs.
It is hypocritical to talk about how much you love Prince and yet would steal from the guy.

As per the Fourth Edition of the American Heritage College Edition Dictionary, to be a hypocrite is to engage in "the practice of professing beliefs, feelings, or virtues that one does not hold or possess."
That being the definition, hypocrisy is not what you are talking about. One can love someone and still act in an improper way toward that person. Someone might steal money from their parents; it does not mean that they do not love them. To be a Prince fan hypocrite, using the technical definition, one would have to talk about how much they disliked Prince and then go home and seriously jam out.
I do not disagree with you that there are ethical implications concerning the illegal music industry. I just don't care for the improper use of a word.

No we all are not. I've been given music over the last ten years and 90% of it, I can do without. Even with his released projects, I don't own all of it, nor do I think it great just because it's Prince.

It's the equivalent of smiling in his face and stabbing him in the back to me. I think he cares less what negative comments people make about him because those don't cost him money.

A lot of the posts here tend to be overly positive. I'm all for the positivity but I always wonder something: Do the people who praise Prince so openly ever buy or download bootlegs? do you post his pictures here or elsewhere knowing he doesn't approve of it? Do you visit sites where his videos are shown? How are those fans different from the ones that people perceive as negative? Is it because your dirt is done in the dark?

I don't think that I'm a hypocrite. I have never intentionally downloaded anything that I thought was a bootleg. Yet, I've had a few weak moments, and downloaded two items. Call it wishful thinking if U like, but I thought the two downloads I obtained, would be perfectly cool with Prince. Mainly they were songs he had already released and it was only later that I realized what a fool I am.
I've met some pretty extravegant Prince fans. Everything from those who bootleg for a business, to those who give away their collection of all Prince related things when Prince doesn't do what they want him to.
So no, I really don't feel like a hypocrite, I'm just a fan who loves Prince and who wishes that all fans treated him like he hopes they would.

I'm not a hypocrite with Prince. I tend to be more positive with Prince than negative but I can see the forest from the trees. I do have bootlegs. 90% of those were given to be and the other 10% I paid for. If they were to ever be released officially, I would be the first in line to buy them. I love the dude and his music, no more or less.

I dont know how positivity and praise has anything to do with bootlegs confuse I would think it would be more hypocritical to praise Prince on here and then slam him for something he said, or slam him if someone out in the real world asked what u think of him lol
As for me, I often post positive about Prince...but I also see his not-so-good side...u have to to have any sense. He's not the Messiah, he's just a very naughty boy giggle Nor is the guy a prophet and I do question some things but I still love his music and have some admiration for him.
As for bootlegs, as I discovered one or two cds I bought online are actually not good no no no! Bad Chilli spank But im not going to throw them out because of that, although I did feel a bit guilty lol
Since then I have accepted a few downloads from people that I probably shouldnt and I make no excuses for that. I have also posted pics of Prince shrug I don't know the protocol on the whole pic thing confuse but I have been told I have posted pics I shouldnt on other sites and then get the old "Prince will hunt u down" Really?? fine...goood luck with that because I don't have anything he can sue me for....unless he wants my children lol ANd really, if he dosent want his pic taken...might I suggest he become a hermit giggle
But in answer to ure question (finally chilli lol) NO, I dont think Im a hypocryte) So there u go

I was speaking about Prince's fans that think he can do no wrong. Who basically worship him.

I actually feel guilty about some of the boots I own but anyone trying to get Purple Music from me will have to pry it from my cold, dead hands. nod

i agree.

the downloading of bootlegs is something else entirely. being hypocritical, in that sense, would be condemning the people who download illegal music then downloading the music yourself.

but there are some people who have no problem downloading music off the internet without paying for it because they don't see it as a crime, or feel like they are harming anyone, which could lead to >>>>> downloading Prince's music despite his wishes.

No.I.am.not. I don't care. Where do you get the impression that I'm quick to get a listen to anything? Someone sent me the music that goes to the latest Prince book 3 months ago. I listened to it for the first time tonight. When the new songs were premiered, I didn't get them til days later and only listened then because people were raving about them. I didn't buy Planet Earth. Y'all are junkies. I don't begrudge y'all that but stop lumping people together.

Anxiety

i have my own ethics as a music fan, and my prince music is just one part of all the music i love, so i don't set any special standards for him just because he has special opinions on this or that. i will always buy his albums on CD (or whatever the future hardcopy format will be), because i like having his albums in a physical form, hopefully with liner notes and lyrics included. but if his album happens to leak online and i happen to get access to it, oh well. if i want to hear it ahead of time, i will listen to it if given the resources.

there have been times i've refused to listen to a new prince album until i could get a copy of the actual CD in my hands, even though there were mp3s bouncing around left and right. that didn't have anything to do with honoring prince's wishes. it had more to do with delaying gratification until i could have the whole experience in front of me.

i think prince has the ability to squash leaked copies of his upcoming albums if he really wants. i think he's done a good job with a couple of his projects in the past. i think he knows darn well that by previewing those songs on the radio, they'd be bouncing around all over the net by the end of the day. who knows what his motivations are or how he thinks he's playing his fans, but i do think he knows what he's doing and at the end of the day, everyone ends up more or less satisfied.
