was the character Mary Sharon inspired by Susannah? Do you think maybe the characters Christoper Tracy and Mary Sharon were meant to be exaggerated versions of Prince and his relationship with Susannah? Prince coming from humble working class background and Susannah coming form a more privileged background. Prince being the womanizer and Susannah being a good girl, in this case Christopher a gigilo and Mary Sharon was "most definitely a virgin" according to one scene.

In real life I don't think P was from the wrong side of the tracks. He was from a hard working Middle Class family that promoted the value of education and hard work.
P just had hood fantasies but he couldn't make it as a hoodrat. They don't have styling gel at the Korean store on the corner. You'd have to go the the other Korean beauty supply place downtown. And to be a pimp you have to get your nails dirty. It was PRINCE'S FANTASY. What he'd be in Life and well I heard he ORIGINALLY wanted MADONNA in the TITLE role.

Susannah was Prince's original choice for to play the role, but it quickly became apparent she couldn't act, so it never happened.
Shame really. Not that Christen Scott-Thomas doesn't do her job well, but it would've been nice to have it as an 'inside job', like Purple Rain. Re: inspiration for the role. Well, I think you're onto something. The lyrics to 'High Fashion' are along a similar theme to the movie. [Edited 1/2/09 16:59pm]

Seriously?!?! How bad could she have been to be too bad for a Prince movie? Wow. Actually, I've seen her in two movies since, and she wasn't that bad.

I agreed Susannah isn't a bad actress. I wished that she would pursue acting career but she might just dont to now she just like being low-key as a stay at home (since hubby travels a lot especially with eric clapton) and plus she enjoys writing songs.
The reason why Susannah wasn't selected because the producers wanted a more well-known and professionally trained actress played Mary Sharon and it would been risky to have a newcomer to be the female lead, it was nothing to do with her acting skills. .

I can go with the professionally trained part but well known, not so much. Scott - Thomas had only done some english television and one movie before Cherry Moon and it was a short film. This was her first "major film" and it introduced her to the States. Who ever said Prince has lost it - has lost it. The Kid's still got game!

I never thought of it like that. ladygirl99 said: The reason why Susannah wasn't selected because the producers wanted a more well-known and professionally trained actress played Mary Sharon and it would been risky to have a newcomer to be the female lead, it was nothing to do with her acting skills.
. It amounts to the same thing - not professionally trained is the same as an unskilled actress, see. This was Kristin Scott Thomas' first real movie, so it wasn't about her being well-known. [Edited 1/3/09 1:54am]

no he originally wanted Madonna for an earlier version of Graffiti Bridge I take that back he may have wanted Madonna for that role also, he knew their combined names would be a big box office draw.
