last great album: 3121

runner up - the rainbow children

last masterpiece - the gold experience

Its all opinions, lol, but I always have to chuckle when someone lists the gold experiennce and trc as "Masterpieces" too funny!

oh please can i have the honor of chuckling 2 at ur suggestion of his last masterpiece?
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Sure, SOTT, chuckle away.
Masterpieces are supposed to be something beyond mediocre at best.
But heck, art is of coarse subjective, always has been always will be.
Enjoy your "masterpieces"

I'd say Chaos and Disorder. Albeit flawed and publicized as a perfunctory exercise the messiness, the "fucked-up" mixing (which some major players in the performance had alluded to) and the general slapdeshery of the whole affair seem to draw me in rather than repel. Prince is the Fassbinder of the music world. If anything he is as prolific. But more importantly, all his albums which have gained classic status like Fassbinder's films are flawed in some way that's why they seem to resist canonization. But that's what makes them special.

I also think that Chaos and Disorder, Emancipation and New Power Soul are up for a fresh reevaluation. Personally, I find myself playing them more nowadays than all the Prince sacred cows from the 80s.

One can take all the sounds that can be found on this planet, all the voices, all the beats, all the melodies and still he would never be able to repeat something like THE GOLD EXPERIENCE.

In my opinion his last "great" album was Musicology, though.

i will agree that SOTT is a masterpiece however 2 say he hasn't done a masterpiece record since then is something 2 chuckle at

I have been very forceful in my opinion that Emancipation is one of the worst offerings I have heard by Prince. However, lately I have been giving it more consideration. Some of the songs are just awful, and I will never come around to them. Regardless, Emale, Joint 2 Joint, and Soul Sanctuary have recently been added to my regimen. So I agree that Emancipation is receiving a re-evaluation, at least by me. The other two are terrible. I tried re-evaluating Chaos and Disorder a number of times but always reach the same conclusion. New Power Soul is one of about 5 studio releases that I do not have, so I can't re-evaluate it.

BTW, my vote on this one is Musicology. I like 3121, but I do not consider it a great. PE is lower level. Nonetheless, I have been enjoying my "Indigo Nights" disc that came with the book, but I have had it for less than 2 weeks so I cant judge its greatness quite yet.

I dunno the answer cuz what id consider great would differ greatley to the next orger nod, I love most of his albums to be honest...even if I dont love every song, Rave, Musicology and 3121 I enjoyed immensley, much more than the "fan" faves like Lovesexy and The Rainbow Children. Ofcourse most of my fave albums are from the 90's...so there would be no point in me expressing an opinion cuz id get stoned! lol

optimus say what u want and don't fear getting stoned. ur voice is 2 b heard and if someone doesn't like it, oh well. u have a right 2 say what u like or dislike

Last great? Hmmm.
For me. The Rainbow Children.
Has everything. It's weird, conceptual, funky, rockin, melodic, jazzy, and experimental. And at times, annoyance. wink
Btw Optimus, I also Love Chaos & Disorder.

I've always enjoyed Chaos and Disorder and New Power Soul is one of my Top Ten Prince albums despite the abuse that disc takes here.

As time goes on, I get fonder of "Musicology." At this point, I'd say that was his last great one.

But Planet Earth was alright, so it's not like I see Prince as being in dire creative straits or anything.
I've seen the future, and boy it's rough...

"Musicology" was the last great album for me. It is just as good as the "Gold Experience". I have a strong feeling that the next album will be THE comeback album we have all been waiting for. Fingers crossed. biggrin
