Prince gets tired of people and he get tired of sounds. He's a fickle, creative guy, and he just moves forward with something until he feels he's worn it out, and then discards it.
Some stuff sticks longer - the Revolution era had it's sounds. The NPG era had its sounds, which were far more predictable and less 'courageous' but also were catchier in their own way and full of more energy. And then Prince moved on. He was in his James Brown big horn old tyme R&B phase for awhile there, and the new tracks we've heard seem to point toward a potentially more guitar-oriented sound. But, with Prince, that may last half an album, a full album, or for 3 more albums. Who knows. It's all a matter of when he gets tired of it. So, to answer the question posed - Prince could return to the sound, but that sounds been done, so therefore, it would never feel the same. Because his mindset and interest aren't in that mode any longer. You want Prince to create music you want to hear and that's different? Then let him do his thing and he'll give us what he's feeling. OH - and as far as people saying Prince stopped being experimental with the leaving of W&L/the Revolution I have to disagree. He's still experimenting, but when you look at Emancipation - that album is all over the place full of new crazy sounds that I'd never heard from the man. From "My Computer" to "Big White Mansion" to "Joint2Joint" and more, the guy does what he feels - sometimes we've heard it, sometimes we haven't. But even a return of W&L wouldn't bring a lot back to Prince, because it's only through a consistent infusion of new musicians, sounds, and ideas does Prince get that bug to play with different sounds. Bringing back someone he's already worked with just brings back the same old influences he's played with. No need to go there in my mind. I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! Cause you know the Karma Sutra? I can rewrite it. But, with half as many words.

I'm actually sort of tired of reading this, and can see why there are SO many arguments on this board. We all have an affection for the guy, but think about other artists - they progress, you either follow or you leave. I don't listen to Radiohead anymore, since I find their post OK Computer/Kid A work to be lackluster. I stopped enjoying Pearl Jam after Vitalogy. Musicians change, and you either like it or you don't. But that's not a testament to their work. Prince's post WB life is just as interesting, just as enjoyable, just as wonderful as his with WB life. I actually prefer post WB, but that's because I don't carry expectations. What I love about Prince is that I can play 5 Prince albums in a row, and anyone unfamiliar with him will have their mind blown - because they didn't realize there wasn't such a thing as a "Prince song." The guy's a musical genius, and he pushes the envelope *most* of the time. And when he doesn't, most of us call a spade a spade. I don't like TRC - many here do. I love 3121, lots here don't. But I'll take 3121 over the 'Black Album' anyday. Black Sweat is the mofk'n JAM. I wanna be loved to the 9s, so let me cover your ass with this sheet, and baby, you better stay on the beat! There's a lot of his 90's and recent work that I enjoy more than the 80's stuff. However, to deny that his career during the 90's was full is missteps seems dangerously close to being an apologist thinking he can do no wrong. There was a long period between TMBGITW and Musicology where he chose to do a lot of self defeating moves.

Bah, to the lot of ya. The Prince I know and love is 1980 to 87. The 90s and then the Zeros religious Prince is some other conservative dude that I'm usually not really interested in. He may be a genius, but I've known a share of geniuses in my life. Big deal.
The response here begs the question, why do people feel it is important to make the point that the best of Prince's work is Prince's creation and Prince's creation alone?

Considering MPLSound seems to be about recapturing some of his old sounds, it's possible that there will be some Around The World In A Day flavour in it.
