Prince Wanted 4 Jam Master Jay Tribute.

I just got off the phone with Grandmixer DXT, who is in charge of a recorded tribute 2 Jam Master Jay that he's about 2 embark on.

He wants Prince involved, and asked me 2 try 2 get the message 2 Prince, which I will do here, before my other paths 2 him.

I'm down with the whole original Zulu Nation hip-hop crew... Grandmixer DXT is known most 4 his scratches on Herbie Hancock's "Rockit".

Now he does a lot of digital remastering... he did the recently discovered John Coltrane/Thelonius Monk live recording... previously unheard, and stashed in the national archives.

Pretty cool.

I don't either but if something happened, it would be interesting to see and hear the end result.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Thanks Giovanni, info much appreciated. When JMJ was murdered, many of his fans in Queens, NY, including myself, who remembered when he and the rest of the crew first came out, were devastated by the news, as others around the world as well.

I remember when RUN DMC would ride around Queens in their car and fans were elated when they saw them. They often stopped traffic, and would just about show up anywhere with their recognizable black hats on, and were well received and respected. He and the other members of RUN DMC put Queens, NY on the map.

They did. They weren't far from where my Great-Grandmother lived in Jamaica, Queens. I remember that it was a very big deal when they became big.

I remember on my way home from shopping one day, and there was a traffic backup on Merrick Blvd and it was because RUN DMC attracted so much attention, they were shaking hands, and slapping high-fives with their fans from their car. If this project goes through, like Giovanni says, it will be interesting. Also, if they haven't been inducted into the RRHOF yet, they certainly deserve to be. Maybe Giovanni can answer that question.

I know some old school rappers from back in the day were inducted not too long ago.

No disrespect to Jam Master Jay who touched a lot of people, but why would a high-caliber artist (Prince) do a tribute to a much lesser "artist"?

don't you think that sounds a little too high and mighty say, even though JMJ had a huge influence in early hip hop.

Actually no I don't.
I did try to be respectful to JMJ as I hope you see.

But he's not in the same league as Prince. Obviously it's hard to compare different genres ...

It might sound elitist, but Prince is an elite compared to JMJ, no matter what genre.

I'm just looking for explanation on why on earth Prince should do this tribute...

No disrespect to JMJ, but there are many other artists who I'd rather see a tribute to from Prince than him. James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, even Donny Hathaway. I can't see why he would do a tribute to someone in hip-hop at all.

Jay -- I say the same thing about not comparing across genres several posts ago.

My comment clearly is not ignorant. Lesser artist pay tributes to greater ones. Not the other way around.

Kid I'm aware of your judgement. No has fully answered the question.
Answer it or stop boring me.
What's ignorant is that anyone would think Prince would do a tribute downward.

Great artists pay tributes to other great artists. One icon to another. One groundbreaker to another.
