Evenly amongst the garbage bin, the dumpster out back, the land fill, your computer's trash and all the fam's Christmas stockings.
No hard feelings.

I want to see Prince back online. Allow mail order and download (in cd quality) options.
Also I see no problem with exclusive to a certain retail chain distribution. I'd stay away from Wal-Mart, however. Mostly because the idea of Wal-Mart.
But maybe Best Buy, Target, Starbucks.

I'm not understanding why it seems to be an issue for him this time around, really.
He's made distribution deals in the past (Emancipation), and handled his own distribution (NewPowerSoul), he's also done things exclusively online. Seems he's done enough various types of distribution he should have a pretty good idea of which way works best for him.

It all depends on Prince's objective. If it's to maintain the status quo. Do what he's always done, if he desires more listeners. Here's a suggestion:

Big P.R. splash is needed to generate interest.

Have a lottery type deal at first. Folks like that. The first one hundred folks randomly drawn (and I do mean randomly) attending a tony listening party/mini concert "schmooze and oogle", replete with all the v.i.p. stuff.

In fact there could be 4 lottery chosen listening parties all taking place at the same time, with live link ups (for lack of technical knowledge) to the main v.i.p one. The following U.S. locations would be great.

N.Y.
L.A.
D.C.
ATL

This could be duplicated in Europe, with London being the main locale, and other European points of interest as satellites.

Other artists from various genres of music/the arts should be invited to participate. Not a showy, circus-y type of deal (read: lose the go go girls and pink pastel suits). Serious musical entertainment.

Once genuine interest in Prince's artistry has made a resurgence, sales are easy. It'll catch on like a wildfire in true 'flavor of the month, Access Hollywood' fashion.

As a rule, people don't buy quality, they buy what everyone else buys.

I think he should team up with newspapers of the major cities of the world and distribute his CD with the Sunday newspaper.

I think it is his best way of making money.

I think that's a great idea and your last line is the truth.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Good idea. For NY, that would be NYTimes, NY Daily News, NY Post and also the Newsday for the Long Islanders in Nassau/Suffolk Counties.

I think He should do a PLanet Earth Type release. Get a flat fee for the release and keep the masters. That way, downloads and pirating dont matter much, he still got paid. Then use the release to hype a rock tour that he would, as history tells, kill.

how on god's green earth is a person supposed to make money giving away a cd that costs upwards of $300,000 to make plus duplication! art for art's sake is great... but HOW do you make money? what about all the instruments? all the equipment? you've got to be kidding! and i tunes? wtf? are you kidding? i tunes is a first class road to absolute obscurity.

cheers!

what difference is it to keep a digital master if the product is stolen into the hands of the public? the tour issue is a good idea, but why should anyone want to buy the milk if the cow is stamping on your head?

cd is over except for distributing SOFTWARE. we've already gone over this production issue and it is quickly becoming antiquated as a format for mass distribution.

cheers!

That might be true as a rule for most people, but there are people like me who are music collectors. I don't like downloading music.

That's why so many artists offer different formats for their fans. It might cost
more, but I think some people enjoy having liner notes and such for the future.

I think to get rid of some kind of lossless format is not sensible. People always like to think everything from the past will be obsolete in the future, but I don't think that happen (i.e. vinyl).

its funny that we come back around to the vinyl issue... i suggest this.. a new vinyl format that translates to digital output.... yeah. maybe

or a disk the size of the laser disk from back in the day but with HD videos for the entire project
smile

cheers!
