Mike Phillips introducing the NPG - aftershow, 1 September (am), 2007, IndigO2:
"Our section leader who holds it down and writes all the arrangements and makes it possible for us to do our thing as horns - give it up for Mr Greg Boyer" . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

That could simply mean that Greg Boyer is the transcript writer. Prince tells him what he wants to hear and greg arranges that between the horn section. Does not neccesarily mean he literally composes the horn lines. Although we can not rule that out, i find it unlikely.

Well neither Greg nor Prince 'compose' some horn lines because they are taken from other songs. As to whether Greg Boyer writes the arrangements (which are the words used by Mike Phillips) as opposed to writes the arrangements down, I've not come across anthing closer than the above to clarify. In the past: 1. Prince has provided the horn section with lead lines around which they might provide arrangements (this must have been the case at times with the Hornheadz because at one point a member of the horn section appeared to claim online to have written these only to publish clarification at a later stage that Prince provided the lead lines) 2. incorporated arrangements composed by the horn section into his songs (he specifically instructs Eric Leeds to write horn fills during one '80s rehearsal, for example) ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. Some but not all the horn lines. There are stabs and fills throughout the live rendition which cannot be attributed to other artists langebleu said:

And, perhaps, the best demonstartion of how horns are 'worked with' for in his music. [b][Edited 12/27/08 5:05am]
