I totally agree with you! I think Prince became almost just as vulgar as Paris Hilton. Listening to his music embarrasses me.

JWs love it because he's quoting scripture and trust me, I know lots of JWs and boy do they love to quote scripts. In fact, they have conversations purely by quoting script. Its kinda interesting. Almost like confutious (? spelling) in that you can interpret differently, but I digress. And the Kool-Aid drinkers "oh Prince is such a genius, oh how he plays the guitar and writes lyrics like voting sucks," its so deep you might drown in those waters lol. The real fans, like me. We're still in hibernation re: Prince. Won't buy anything of his until simply, he makes something of quality. But as usual, the man won't record a live concert and sell it more than once every 20 years. Get real P! [Edited 12/24/08 13:37pm] so there's no such thing someone having different taste than you? i really like four of the five new songs. i didn't like planet earth too much but i loved 3121. so what, because i like something you don't i'm a koolaid drinker. that's really childish. i think what you're suffering from is Prince Battered Fan Syndrome. I wish I had that battered fan postcard to post here. If you're not satisfied with Prince move the on, stop holding yourself hostage to one musician that does not satisfy you anymore.

I've been a fan.. a 'real fan' for about 26 years now. Prince has already served me the cake.. again and again and again. Right now... everything is just icing. He could have packed it in 10 years ago and would have stilled served up enough music for four legendary careers over..
After 30+ years of making music, I'm not expecting another Purple Rain, 1999, Lovesexy or Sign o' The Times... though to my surprise he did deliver 3121 which to me now ranks among my favorite official releases. For the most part, I just hope for some music I can bob my head and snap my fingers too. And in those regards he still delivers.

[Edited 12/24/08 13:37pm] I am quite satisfied with the new music and I fit neither of your descriptions. What does that say about your logic? I'm no JW for certain, but if there were a scripture about shitty threads, I would post it here. Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

So you think you're more "real" a fan than anybody else? Give me a break. I don't agree with a lot of his JW mumbo jumbo either, but there's still plenty of other aspects of his new music that I would say I'm very "satisfied" with. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

If you ain't feeling it, you're free to get off the train. In fact, make sure the train don't run you over when you "gett off". I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

True. You guys are the real fans of Prince's new music. But when you can practically count new listeners/appreciators of his new stuff with your hand, up to ten, that's a "sign" to get real.
Lets just say, if he reverted back to anything like ATWIAD, you would probably spin in circles wondering what happened to that sound you liked, while millions of people would stand at attention and pull out their wallets to buy the new stuff. But sure its not all about money, but he's a business man and why should he suffer just appealing to fanatics when he could use his gift to make good music. Prince is funny that way, he just doesn't like being popular but at the same time loves being the center of attention. Ironic.

How many new listeners are there of an artist that's 50 fucking years old??? He could make Purple Rain part 2, Reunite the Revolution, an Release EVERYTHING from the vault, and there STILL wouldn't be as many "new listeners". When I was a teenager, I wasn't trying to listen to what my parents listened to!!! I bet when you were a teenager listening to Prince, you weren't thumbing through your parents Temptations records!!! Prince is at the age where people aren't buying his albums like they used to. So he's kind of making music for himself. He still has a large fanbase, so whatever he puts out is gonna make money. Plus people come out to his concerts in droves. That's why he loads the show with the "hits". JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

How many new listeners are there of an artist that's 50 fucking years old??? The over-the-hill theory doesn't pan out. Check out Coechella and come back. Or just go a concert, I've been to 3 and he hasn't seemed to lost anything but his funky dance moves.

People aren't buying his new albums like they used to. Of course he still has it live, but most of the people there just wanna hear the classics like Purple Rain, Kiss, When Doves Cry, etc. Madonna had the highest grossing tour this year, but her new album didn't sell. Her shows were packed and people paid top dollar to see her. I can pretty much guarantee most of the people there weren't there to hear songs from her new album!!! I think Prince has more talent in one strand of hair than Madonna ever had. My favorite song of her's is that "this is not a love song" , but Prince probably wrote it. He's in an altogether different class. Similar would be McCartney who has made a bunch of shit for 20 years. However, now he is coming out with an album of impro's, one recording a day, and from what I hear its gonna be big. How do you think it would sound if Prince hit the studio and improvised one track a day? No copy and paste lyrics over eachother, just him and a band jamming? That's something Miles Davis would even respect.

Yeah, I'm not thinking 4 long instrumentals, something Coltrane-esque is anywhere near making short impros with lyrics. I mean, improvisation encompasses many things.

Course one could argue that he is a jazz musician among other things. He does have skills. What I'm referring to is more along the lines of the "Black Album." If that wasn't impro, I don't know what is. And I don't care what anyone thinks, its one of his best albums and gets better with time. Cindy C. Damn! Just one example. You know I could go off on the merits of each work, but that would take a lot of typing.
