I'd love an album of rock covers by Prince

I'm sorry to say it but my top 3 Prince moments of the last few years have been
The Best of You/All along the watchtower
Creep
Crimson And Clover

I think I would be more excited about an album like that than another album of new Prince material.

Now feel free to abuse me. I welcome your scorn.

I don't go in for scorning others' opinions. T'would be interesting. Not a bad idea - to see the hitmaker hit at somebody else's hits.

Crimson and Clover and Creep really move me and Prince seems to take others songs and make them so much better. Take "One of us" as an example

I'd also love to hear him record While My guitar gently weeps.

I'm just bored of the inevitible dissapointment a new album will bring.

I tend to bvalue Prince "conceptual" albums more over the last decade.
NEWS
Xpectation
One night alone
TRC

Even if I took the great trax from Musicology, 3121 and Planet Earth and made one great album it would still lack the heart that Prince's classic albums had.
The more experimental th better I say.

My exact feelings too, I was thinking the same. Those covers were great and my fav moments of recent times. If he picked the right rock songs he could do a great covers album. In recent times I feel his R&B/funk has become totally lame (other than Black Sweat which I loved but divided fans).

I hate when Prince does covers.
I don't like to see geniuses remaking other people's music.

Plus, when he does ... it sounds like the music I WISH he would make ... and that just makes his lack of current inspiration/innovation even more obvious.

Crimson & Clover is sooo good it makes me sad ... he had to do a REMAKE to affect me this much? That is painful for me to admit.

I loved his version of Everyday is a Winding Road, too. And every time I hear it it's so perfect with his changed lyrics ....that I wonder why couldn't he have wrote it in the first place?! And don't talk about "One of Us." My god, great rendition ...and yet you get the impression he doesn't know what the lyrics mean.

I could not take a whole album of covers. I wouldn't be able to listen to any of his current original tracks afterward. The covers would blow them out of the water.

That would be a bit much. I don't mind him doing covers but to do a full album of nothing but covers, nah. Not a good idea, IMHO.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

That's no feat.
It's easy to upgrade a song once the genius is already there.

Someone recently told me "Don't get mad. But the Foo Fighters version of Darling Nikki is way better than Prince."
confused

Yeah. Foo Fighters kick ass on it. It's a more intense and bigger sound. But could they have made it from scratch? They are following an outline already laid by the original artist. Once the aura, lyrics, music, and vocal delivery are there ...and you just finesse it a little more .... don't even be so presumptuous as to think you outrank the creator.

The originator gives the song it's soul. Remaking and "improving" on it is small.

You have hit the nail on the head. I totally concur, I would rather hear new music that moved me like when I first got to know Sometimes it snows in April, The Cross, The beautiful ones etc etc but it aint gonna happen so as I have to settle for either generic new music from Prince or his reinterpretaion of other songwriters, I'll take the latter. .
