I think this song is very life affirming and inspirational.
On the one hand it shows his cheeky rebellious side, but on the other it is about believing in yourself and being true to yourself. It is a song where Prince is thinking in his head about all the gossip he has heard about himself. Is he black or white, straight or gay? He can't understand why these things are important. The questions that he asks himself are 'Do I believe in God? Do I believe in me?' We know from experience that these questions are far more important to Prince. But then he says, rather philosophically, 'Life is just a game, we're all just the same'. When I hear this line it always reminds me that we are all the same underneith. I love this song. Plus I love the cheeky manner he sings it! Shut up already, damn. | |

Yes, I LOVE Controversy, one of his best songs ever! Oh, and I think it really sums Prince up too, it's like his 'defining' song..
