Does It Bother You When Prince... does a cover version of another artist's song and puts it on his CD? Or when he performs a cover version of another artist's song in concert?
I personally am not too crazy about it, since most of the songs that Prince does a cover version of have already been played to death on the radio anyway. I guess I'd rather hear a new jam that Prince just wrote, or even an old jam that was previously unreleased. I'm curious and interest to see what people's opinions are on this subject. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

usually yes. i've only like a few of his covers (the new Crimson and Clover cover is great)
but in concert when he covers things like "crazy" or "play that funky music" it's like why? on top of that it just shows how much of a hypocrite he is. he has a bitch fit when people cover his music but it's ok for him to cover other people's work? whatever

If I buy a Prince cd,I wanna hear Princez' music.
If I buy a Prince concert tic,I'd prefer 2 hear Princez' music. A genius like Prince, with SO many albumz and SO much good music, should never have 2 touch a cover. That said,I LOVE Crimson and Clover.

Can I be honest? I really don't listen to any of Prince's covers of other artist with the exception of "A Case of You." Prince really made that song his, but other than that to answer your question Psych-it really does bother me.

As strongly as he feels about others covering sampling w/o thatartist's OK; I would say he has more respect than to double talk. Prince's Sarah

depends on the song and what he does to it.
For example: Everyday is a Winding Road -- possibly the most undeserving hit song from one of the most overrated female pop singers of all time, Sheryl Crow. Although I still didn't like the song, and thought Prince's revamp of it was a bit silly---he still breathed much more life into that song than I ever imagined possibly. It went from a limp penis to a rock hard penis, but with too may veins and warts on it. But it was still rock hard, which is something crow couldn't do it the figurative penis. One of Us - Although Prince's voice can't compare the sometimes raspy/sometimes silky voice of Joan Osbourne, his rendition of One of us was much more Raw--his guitar solo gave the song juice. The tune transformed from sounding like a sweet lullaby to the anthem it deserved to be. Where Prince fucks up is when he changes what a given song was meant to be to fit his purposes or statements. For example, though I liked his rendition of Radiohead's Creep, and disagree with Radiohead fans that Prince "murdered" what amounts to a boring throwaway song at best which could have been recorded by any old lounge act, I still think that Creep was sufficiently iconic enough, and the band (Radiohead) well established enough, that in approaching to cover their song, Prince should have kept the original spirit of the song intact. Creep is an alienation anthem that seeks to (but doesn't quite) capture some of the more lonely/morbid stuff Morrissey and the Smiths were doing (I'm not saying Yorke was deliberately aiming for that in case any of you douche-bags want to harp on that). Prince, as touchy as he is about others covering his own songs, turned that fucker on it's head and tried to make Creep actually be 'uplifting'. Lawd, what the hell? What next, Smells Like Teen Spirit becomes a gospel song? Finally, though I like to see him add a healthy dose of life to a song (His rendition of Best of You is far better than the original IMO), I guess as a Prince fan you kind of think.... Why bother? I mean, he's brilliant. There's no denying that. And he's far more prolific than any of the artists that he's covered. He simply doesn't need their songs. If he wants a religious anthem, he could write his own in a day. grammar edit [Edited 12/22/08 5:14am]

Yes it does, very much, because he is a BIG OLE HYPOCRITE. He gets all bent out of shape when other people cover his work but he doesn't mind covering other's work.

I don't like it when he changes the lyrics (aside from gender-related ones). Why cover a song when you're just going to butcher its meaning?
And I would rather he'd done A Case Of You as a full cover & not just a bit of it. Would definitely prefer something new (or old) & good from his own mind.

Honestly, no it doesn't. I would prefer that he did his own stuff but Prince has a way of making most of the covers that he does sound great and I wind up going back to the originals and come back with a better appreciation for both. Every now and then, it doesn't work (I Can't Make U Love Me) but more times than not, I'm down with it. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Coachella, creep. I don't mind him playing covers because he always makes them completely his and I actually like them. The only original I liked better was Bonnie Raitt's I can't make you love me. I loved every day is a winding road. And one of us was way better than Joan's. Case of you is of course a true gem. Didn't he once say to those two Belgian brothers on TMF (Soulwax) that he didn't mind people covering him but then it had to be a good cover? Something like that.

i'm middle of the road on this..i belive he enchanced everyday is winding road, and one of us. live tho it's getting 2 b overkill. i'd rather hear him play his songs in concert with the added surprise of certain songs. when he did barry white's ectasy ..that's a real shocker and it sounded good. repeated playings of skin tight, brick house and all the sly covers is getting dull.
on record once in a blue moon is ok man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
