I don't get any nod to Jimi on this song (or combo of songs; however you want to look at it). Just a nice mashing that he decided to do.

WHAT??? "Baby I think I love you, but I want to know for sure," followed by heavy rock guitar? Are you quite mad? Perhaps you think it's more Troggs than Hendrix's cover of the song?

Only Prince could get away with making this song, but oddly enough, it does work for him. I wonder why he didn't layer any vocals or do the end of Clover.

Just in case ya'll were wondering (for those who don't play guitar or don't know guitar pedals) - the effect he's using is called tremolo, and it sounds like a mod. fast pan.

There was a thread started about the possible meaning of the song which was closed because of this thread.....yet no discussion of the meaning is going on here. In the other thread it said something about how the original song meaning could have something to do with the blood of christ and the holy trinity. Anyone have any idea what "crimson and clover" means? I know that crimson is red, and I know what a clover is but "I just want to show her, crimson and clover, over and over" ? huh? I don't get it.

Blood hmmm Nah. Abandon? nod While the original is a classic, it's not like classics avail no new ground to be covered. Artists record superior (or at least significantly more expansive) remakes all the time, even as they may or may not set out to do so. I think Prince's version, while indeed showing a real reverence for the original, is simply a loungy rehash of it -- and to me that makes for a very fine live cover. To the extent one would commit a pop work to recording, though, I can't imagine why they'd not 1) fully exploit the opportunity to explore a whole new realm in an existing title; or 2) write their own original title, as you've suggested. Much else seems a bit of a waste. shrug

Correction: Not a "waste" (as many people clearly are getting something cool out of it). Just somewhat redundant, IMHO.

I can understand but not agree with most of your points but..to say Prince version is a bit of a "loungy rehash" is a bit much can't really see Prince being loungy about a cover when he knows people will compare versions..i think he done a strip down version...hence the jimi ..which is some clue..i guess to some link..Prince is a smart guy...and hides alot in his music... and we have only heard this over a doggy mp3..when on CD ..i think we may hear more cool

You could be right. I'll hold out for the CD. Maybe Prince will blow me away after all. It's certainly not a bad version by any stretch.

I agree it does sound like a nod to jimi. colonoized mind sounds a bit like prince's recent cover of all along the watchtower as well.

There is certainly nothing wrong with this cover, but it just does nothing for me. I guess I love the original Crimson & Clover so much that any cover of it feels unnecessary.

Now I don’t hardly know him, but I think I could love him. I hope he walks over, because I have been waiting to (meet)show him.

Baby I think I love you, but I want to know show for sure, come here talk to me for a time.

The thought of this what a beautiful feeling, over and over….

Like, "I can't make U love me," "La.Means I Love U," and "Whole Lotta Love." Covering these songs means something 2 Prince. We all respect an original.

When U look at Christmas Music.."How many times have we heard, "Do U Hear What I hear." The song is incredible by everyone that does it. cool

IMO, Prince's rendition of the two songs combined into one was more like a "respectful" tribute.
Tommy and the Shondells' recording of "Crimson and Clover" (written 1969) is so beautiful. I can see Prince totally enjoying the song with all it's vocal harmonies and sound effects.
Also, "Wild Thing" (written 1966) by the Troggs is timeless. It was sexy and bold and was far ahead of it's time lyric wise.

Prince's cover of "Crimson and Clover" is awesomely done. It is proving to be a catalyst for comments and conversation. Also for many, it's a jumpstart to take a look back on our music history.
After all Prince is one of the great musicologist of our time. cool
