Prince fans are just plain sick when new music is released

What the hell is wrong with us? The man lays low all year and then he comes out with a couple of songs and damn if we all don't start buzzing like a bunch of boy band groupies. Never mind that it seems like the man has been dozing all year and when he did have something to say, he (allegedly) stuck his high heel boot right in his mouth. 4 or 5 new songs and all is forgiven...we love him again, he's our hero, our main man, our Prince in shining armor.

There is a definite co-dependency issue going on. And the most fervent of us have it bad. God, back in the day, before the internet, before music was all over the Net even before it was on wax, it was this number. See if this applies to you. You're listening to your local pop station and the DJ says, "Stay tuned because coming up we have the latest from Prince." You haven't heard it, you may or may not have heard he was coming out with a new album. And your heart just starts palpitating. The commercials play and then blam there it is. God, the first time I heard Thieves in the Temple I damn near had a car accident. First time I heard Kiss, it was up against Rock Me Amadeus in a new song contest and I called the phone line 50 times to vote for P, all the while still in shock from the jangly poppy funk I just heard. (For the record, Falco won that night). It has never mattered how much Prince pissed us off with his previous project, when there was a new concord jam coming, it made us salivate like Pavlov's dogs. And 3 decades later, it's no different.

Prince is like the prom queen who never gives the horny teenager the time of day. When the prom queen finally does say something, something like "Carry my books, will you?" there he is, tripping all over himself to get those books, to get that attention he so desperately craves. And so to our we.

It's part of the territory of being a die hard I guess. I wonder if there are other artists out there who elicit such devotion and excitement. I mean is there a hard core segment of Springsteen fans who go on Bruce.Org and start stammering because the boss has just realized a new song. Michael Jackson? U2? Lionel Richie? Sure fans of these other artists get excited but don't we seem to have the most fervency in our devotion?

Anyway new stuff is out...I like it and want to hear more. I'm a tad less excited than I was in my teenage and college years but I'm still immediately hooked and wanting more now that the dimunitive genius has graced our ears with his work.

It's like the Godfather 3...every time I am out, he keeps pulling me back in.
All good things they say never last...

While this is definately an interesting take on some of the Prince fans out here...I do not think this stance is for us all.
Personally, I do not know Prince...So I do not judge him. All I have ever been able to go on is news, and quotes or MISquotes and what comes through in HIS purple music...
I think that people give him a tough time. Sometimes, fans give him too much of a tough time.
People get so angry at him. but he is only HUMAN...
He is a genious....yet he can be withdrawn and strange it seems...
But no matter what, we have fallen in love with his mind, soul, thoughts, and jams!
So he has been "dozing" this year? So what? You know this man is always trying to find himself...testing out new ideas, new things. he changes his mind often...
I still am a Prince fan...
No matter his personal flaws, they are personal...
Everyone has them...
So, I do not get angry....
But I do always get excited!!! Old music, New music....It all excites me!!!
Nice post!
Have a great day!

with all due respect, i know this is oversimplification, but its not like he committed a crime or anything, yes he's done a lot of stupid irrational things with the internet and said things putting his foot in the mouth, but there are far more messed up things in the world - this is from my perspective. he's lost many fans and i respect their right to throw in the towel and move on.

we're all fans for a reason and music is addictive, empowering, and fun. the reaction to planet earth wasn't that good, however these new songs got us salivating for more. I can't help but be excited. I can't seem to stop playing Colonized Mind.

Here's a late-breaking newsflash: Some of us really only care about the music. We don't care who he sues (as long as it isn't us, personally). We don't care about the beefs of disgruntled former employees. We don't care who he's sleeping with (or not sleeping with, as the case may be). We don't care about his opinion on gay marriage.

For us, there is nothing to forgive or forget when the music comes out. We're just excited to hear it.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

You see, you are least brave enough to admit it.

Unlike the rest of you sitting in front of your computers wearing your frayed 1984 "Purple Rain" T-Shirts.

Mine goes halfway down my chest and bears a striking resemblance to the shirt Prince wore in the "Mountains" video.

I laughed all through readin this post...it's funny but true.
I use to be a fan of MJ, but now I could care less about wat new music he put out (if any). The same goes for other artists that I've once been a fan of, mainly cause they've done or said something wayyy out of bounds (eg. R.Kelly).
Some fans can separate the man from the music but there are prolly some right now trying desperately to get back some of the Prince stuff they've sold in their anger after he made the comment regarding Prop 8 hah!
Think Prince put some kinda spell on us to love his music regardless of how pissed off some of us may get at him? hmm OK OK I kida I kida lol
I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh
