Why did Prince sell out 21 concerts in London even though he doesn't rule the charts anymore?

My theory: the audience are people who are in their 30s or 40s who don't by a lot of albums anymore or influence the charts but grew up with his music.

And let me say, selling out 21 concerts in the same city, that was an extraordinary thing to do!

Your theories please smile

Prince is a legend in his own right. He is beauty and he is love. He already sold out 21 nights in my heart years ago.

Keep up the good work, Prince heart

Peace, love, and respect,

He has a long string of hits, particularly from the 80's ( who doesn't know Purple Rain or When Doves Cry?), that people LOVE to hear, plus he is known for being a fantastic live performer. Those of us who grew up listening to him probably made a big part of the audience, as well as the children of us who have been exposed to Prince's music.

i 4 one prove that your theory has at least some element of fact, as i fit into your category of description, and went to 14 out of the 21 nights.

the elements of ticket price, living genius, great night out and once in a lifetime event (although i would 4give him if he repeated, hint, hint P) should also b thrown in2 the mix.

Tix were £31.21p each (aftershows in the IndigO2 were £25). which in the UK, to see an artist of his stature, is very cheap. plus he gave a couple of million copies of Planet Earth away for nothing. so good publicity.

And that is how he did it! biggrin

cause being around for 30 years with tons of hits will bring folks out to live shows... and considering that artists of today are constantly sampling or copying his music, I say he has fans in all age groups.. 20's - 50+'s

Prince is and has been ahead of his time on several different levels. This is just one of them.

The main reason is that for those 21 shows, a sufficient number of tickets were sold to fill the arena to capacity.
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

"last time he will do the hits" rolleyes and that's proven not 2 b true after the musicology tour, the 21 nights

so once again, his fanbase got duped nod
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Plain and simple, the tickets were cheap.

The fans were able to go to multiple concerts and the casual fans were able to not spend much money and see a star.

Genius if you ask me. What other artist has recently done a huge production and charged such a small amount?

I'm not sure if it would have worked so well somewhere else in the world. Japan, Australia etc... I think Europe and the US only becuase of the ease of travel for such a large volume of poeple.

'Why did Prince sell out 21 concerts in London even though he doesn't rule the charts anymore?'

4 part Answer:

A. Prince has rarely "ruled" the charts and has always kicked ass anyways.

B. Charts are not an indicator of talent, artistry, or quality. They are a barometer of marketing, and consumerism.

C. Europeans know A & B

D. They went to see Prince for 21 Nights in London.

Concerts are big business in general.
80s retro was 'in' at the time.
Legacy acts doing greatest hits shows are always big business.
Only European shows.
Hype.
Prince's reputation as a live act remains despite his pitiful reputation as a recording artist post-name change.

No European dates since 2002 (bar a couple of small one-off shows) so lots of people travelled from all over the UK and Europe to get there.

Low ticket prices - non-hardcore fans could afford to go and see some 'greatest hits' without huge cost. Weirdos that hang around Prince forums went multiple times.

Reputation Those who have seen him live know and spread the word. Especially aftershows (when he turns up)

Charts are no indicator of ticket sales Most singles are bought by kids not old enough to have learnt to download music illegally. Too young for gigs.

Did Prince sell out in Vegas for "3121" also?

I would assume so, as well as selling out in the future.

No he did not sell all the tickets for the Vegas shows. When I was there I saw tickets on sale for half price in a ticket reseller booth for half price for that night's show. This happened three days in a row Dec. 29, 30, 31 2006. But that's part due to him charging $312.10 a night.

But he did sell out in Vegas. Oh yes. He played a residency in a Vegas casino - SELLOUT!

He hadn't played their in a while. He has a great reputation as a live performer, people hoped to hear the hits & tickets were reasonably priced. No great mystery.
