How does Prince really feel about his past? I have a question.
Back in the day Prince used to cuss, write super sexy lyrics, and do crazy little purple dancing gestures on stage. But now he has changed his ways and (at least I don't think) no longer does these things anymore. Do you think he is embarassed by his past and who he was? Most people listen to the original songs he wrote, not his changed lyrics. I wonder how he truely feels when he listens to his older songs like sexy MF and others that have a deep sexual connotation in them now that he has found religion and he has changed his ways. Does anyone have any comments on this?

I don't think he's "embarassed" by his past (OK, maybe the ass-less pants thing but that's enought thread ), I think it's more that he just feels he's matured both physically and spiritually to perform them the way he used to.
The fact that he has gone to effort to change the lyrics to some songs (and let's face it, more often than not it's just a couple of words here and there - the meanings are still the same, mostly) rather than completely ditching them from the setlist shows that he's still very proud of his older material. He even re-recorded "Sexy MF" recently (was played by Rashida at one of the London shows last year) with a simple silence replacing the infamous catch phrase - it works quite well. In one interview I recall c.2004 (forget exactly which one) he was asked if he regretted writing any of those songs and his reply was he doesn't regret anything because he understands why he wrote it at the time. I think he got tired of being a sexobject more than a person. That's why he have such good relations with women - he sure knows what it can be like.

Prince is definitely embarrassed by his past.
He is now a homophobe that would never allow released remasters of his 80's catalog because of the cursing and actual emotion found within said recordings. If you don't think this is possible, allow me to present exhibition A: 'Spirituality.' And exhibition B is the two disc 'Ultimate Prince' release from a few years back. Those that followed the release know Erotic City was initially to be included but was then suddenly removed. Why? Well, take a guess who wouldn't allow 'Erotic City' to be put out on a 'new' Prince release. If you think you'll ever seen anything released from Prince that isn't from his post JW period, you're dreaming. I take that back, I'm sure he'd release an older live or studio track that was absent of, gasp, curse words. No hard feelings.

He's said in interviews that he is not ashamed of his past because that is all apart of who he has become today. [Edited 12/14/08 4:06am]

His present is the most important.
There a re a few things in the present that he should be ashamed of. I guess you all know which things I mean. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I hope he's never ashamed of the things he did back in the day when he was young and free and full of fire, those were really his best days. [Edited 12/14/08 4:24am]

He is ok whith his past. | |

He has no reason to be ashamed of his past. He is one of the most exciting performers/musicians the world has ever seen. Everything in his past was simply him evolving as a musician right up to who he is today. All musician performers change as they get older.
Although perhaps he should be ashamed of the "Come" album. That was a slight mis-step.

He only knows it, but I think he needs being more admired as an great artist than as sexiest man Forever in my life...

Does anyone have any comments on this? Yeah i do i think Prince should be proud of himself. So what if he cussed in his lyrics, its part of how society expresses, but Prince does that intelligently. He may use cuss words but than so do the majority of people, but he also conveys ideas and thoughts, and emotions very intelligently. He can convey a thought with clarity and intelligence, cussing here and there is normal. But there are others who use cuss words because they didn't develope a broader vocabulary base. So they cuss too much. Prince used cuss words in the right amount. If u listen to him in interviews and his lyrics he speaks very intelligently and with a very broad vocabulary base. There are people out there general public and stars alike that use a cuss word everyother word, or too generally. They are the ones that should be thinking about adjusting themselves. Prince is classy ALWAYS. [Edited 12/14/08 7:33am]

Prince has never been entirely the same since the death of Gregory, his son,
Most likely he probably saw this as a symbol of punishment for his former wicked ways... I am a Rail Road, Track Abandoned

The man himself has said in interviews that he doesn't regret what he's done musically in the past cause he was just expressing how he felt at the time...FULLSTOP! I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

You make it sound like Prince was some kind of murderer or criminal or something. He lived his life as he saw fit the way God meant for him and everybody else to do and the the fact that he and Mayte's child died was not meant as a punishment for the way that baby's parents lived. Let me tell you. You don't have no game!

well obviously I'm not talking about "musically" any well seasoned fan knows or has suspected some details of Prince's life in the 80's and early 90's... Thats why it just tickles the fuck out of me that he's anti-gay now... says the man who possibly slept with a few men in his day... Repentance I guess truly gives way to imunity I suppose Pearls before the swine indeed I am a Rail Road, Track Abandoned

"... cuss, write super sexy lyrics, and do crazy little purple dancing gestures on stage...."
Considering that the only one these things Prince no longer does is "cuss", I bet he doesn't feel too bad about his past at all. "New Power slide...."

I don't think anyone here, over the age of 30 or so, is the same as they were at 19. Prince "grew up" in front of the unforgiving eyes of the critical press and those who judge. We all MAY regret something in our past but in general it is a process you have to go through. A journey that makes you who you are now. The person he is now may not be the person we see in another 10 years. We continue to grow, hopefully, for the better as Prince has. He does have some killer early stuff though. That all comes from the raw emotions of a young intellectual musician expressing himself the best way he knows. Keep on Prince!

prince is okay with his past that's why he can't stop doing songs from that era instead of doing more current things man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
