because michael had much bigger marketing which takes away from artistic side of him.

This has nothing to do with MJ but when I go places and speak of Prince they look at me like I'm nuts. Ex: I went to a used video game store for my child, a black man was working behind the desk. I asked what "Prince of Persia" was cuz I was tired of it popping up when looking for Prince stuff. He laughed and said "OMG I thought you were talking about the singer". I stated I am speaking of the artist Prince. I thought he was literally going to lose it laughing so hard. Don't get it. I am always amazed at that reaction. My son had to drag me out of there before I started to state why Prince should be recongnized for all of his creative works. Wasted on someone who doesn't get it I guess.

I'm 20 and from Germany. I can tell you why my generation knows Prince so rarely but MJ:

MJ's songs are more commercial
He had more hits
He had more controversy

As far as I know Prince's success declined after Batman. Lovesexy was a flop in the USA? Did you know the Pet Shop Boys sold more copies of their 1988 album Introspective than Prince did with Lovesexy?

i have to admit i knew next 2 nothing about prince b4 i saw PR on a drunken whim like, 6 months ago. i had made it to 21, being obsessed with music my whole life, comeing home from school to watch mtv, vh1, bet. hanging out in record stores ect ect and i had never heard the song purple rain. so..i dunno. none of my friends know anything about him either. I go "but u don't understand! his music is incredible!" they look at me like i've lost my mind.

My kids are 25 (thinks I'm nuts for loving Prince), 17 (likes Prince's techno style music), and 14 (likes his rap style music). I admit that I wasn't fully aware of Prince's rull range of music until I saw Purple Rain when it was re-released a few years ago and I went nuts. When he was most popular I was such a feminist I would have refused to listen to him. I was on a very different path. I missed out on a lot. Regretabley (sp?). Trying to catch up.Now I love every minute I listen to him. The guy at the store was at least 30 and with all of Prince's touring since "04, I guess that's why it surprises me. Thanks for all the input.

Mike has gone after internet piracy like Prince has.

As for why MJ is more popular with younger kids.

Michael specifically recorded music to reach a wide audience.

When Prince makes music, for the most part he isn't trying to sell 10 million records.

I like some MJ stuff. None of my kids like any of it.

Well, I grew up in a house in which Prince was pretty much banned until I turned 18. He scared the hell out of my mom and he was off limits because of his lyrics and way of dressing. (ass out pants)

It's a rare day to see Michael Jackson with a nipple hanging out and I took a shine ot him as a kid. Mom disagreed with the crotch grabbing, but didn't really mind because unlike Prince, Michael KEPT HIS CLOTHES ON! (She freaked when YANA came out, but that's another story.)

And all my friends learned about Michael from me because I wouldn't shut the hell up about him. Now I'm the same way with Prince.

No matter, I found Prince and I'm happy now.

My kid is 13, she dont like either.

1991 - became Jacko fan, started trying to copy moves from video, bought most of albums, disbelieved media hype and thought he was cool

1993-4 started listening to Ice-T, Snoop, Dre and ShyFX, bought HiStory, disappointed and lost interest as everyone else started to listen to indie music.

1994 - favourite song on radio was TMBGITW, friend of mine kept playing Love Symbol and D&P and picked up Exodus, rarely listened to much else, started to find older Prince albums.

Present - been a Prince fan for nearly 15 years, was only Jacko fan for 3, only like Off The Wall album now, listen to everything I can find by Prince.

In the 80s i was barely aware of Prince songs, liked Kiss and SOTT, but didn't know them as songs done by Prince. Liked the Batman soundtrack because my brother had it. He was a Batman/Jack Nicholson fan not a Prince fan LOL

MOst kids don't know who Prince is or what music he's done because they never see him in mainstream media and his current style doesn't match their idea of 'cool'.
