May the Fonz Be With You: Redefining Religion for Today's Popular Culture:


The episode of Family Guy entitled: "The Father, The Son and The Holy Fonz" deals with the theme of Celebrity Worship. Celebrities and popular culture have in a sense overshadowed traditional religious worship. Peter's worship of the Fonz relates the Fonz with Christ and the establishment of a church dedicated to this television character is a perfect illustration of the power of pop culture over religion.. Religion, particularly church based worship has lost its edge and has not been able to keep up with a changing world. As people become more and more interested in popular culture they tend to turn further a way from religion.

Religion is a set of attitudes or beliefs attaining to a high power. This is a broad definition and one that is obviously open to interpretation. Peter tries several religions but does not find fulfillment in any of them. Like many people today he does not relate to many of the outdated beliefs and strict practices of these faiths. When Peter's father, Francis asks Peter to look inside his heart to find his faith, Peter then turns to the Fonz. For Peter, the Fonz becomes this higher power. Peter then forms The First United Church of the Fonz. This church is modeled closely after Catholicism with one important difference instead of following the bible and worshipping God, Peter uses episodes of the popular show "Happy Days" in which the Fonz was a main character as his sacred scripture.. Peter thus makes a new religion that many people can relate to as it is fresh and new.

This episode is a clear indication of a new direction for public opinion in regard to religion. Christianity and many other religions do not have the same appeal to the masses that they once had. People are therefore taking their faith elsewhere. Religion has had a profound impact on popular culture and in a sense popular culture is now becoming a religion of its own. In his article "he Church of Baseball, The Fetish of Coca-Cola and The Potlatch of Rock'n'Roll", David Chidester offers some different definitions of religion. These definitions may seem absurd on the surface but they do in fact make perfect sense. First Chidester uses a definition offered by Buck O'Neil:

Baseball is a religion because it is an enduring institution
that is governed by established rules. O'Neil says that
'it taught and it teaches everyone elseto live by the rules,
to abide by the rules.' (p 471)

This definition demonstrates the changing view of religion. It is not as restrictive as the one offered about believing in a supreme being and following a set path of beliefs. Instead people have moved away from this and seem to choose a lifestyle or faith more befitting to them. For some this faith can even be following baseball for others it can be as simple as idolizing a famous celebrity or character like the Fonz. Of course not everybody takes pop culture to this extreme but it is becoming clear in today's society that it has a very stronger presence and in a sense functions like religion.

Celebrities have a growing influence in our society. When John Lennon said in 1966 that The Beatles were bigger than Jesus he was really on to something. In many ways celebrities are supreme beings who represent the set of beliefs and practices common to today's popular culture. Celebrities are made larger than life by the media and by those that follow the media.

In the public sphere, a cluster of individuals are given
a greater presence and a wider scope of activity and
agency than are those who make up the rest of the
population. They are allowed to move on the public
stage while the rest of us watch. (ix)

Celebrities do seem to hold a power that the rest of the population does not. They are looked at as role models who embody the beliefs and practices of popular culture. They are looked upon as gods among us. They seem hold a power that God or any other supreme religious being does not hold.

Celebrity worship and popular culture have a growing impact upon society. This is illustrated in looking at the response to television and media publications in comparison to the response to religion and religious practices. Popular culture in a strong sense seems to be the religion of the masses and the celebrities that structure it seem to be its supreme beings.Peter's church seems to embody this theme of popular culture as an almost religious presence in today's society.


The Fonz As a Fad Religion:

Another important religious theme in "The Father, The Son and The Holy Fonz " that I would liketo quickly point out is how it comments on fad religions. Peter creates his religion on a whim attracting many supporters until Brian and Francis lure away his followers with other fad religions. This in a sense shows how easy it is to create a religion and how quickly people eat up these fad religions It only takes one person to come up with a basis for a religion and as Peter proves, it does not have to be a very smart person at that!

I belive that Prince is some sort of prophet or someone of great importance to our world on a biblical level.

I guess I could go on and on there are many many more things about Prince both in lyrics and in his actions that suggest that he is on a much higher plane than most people.
Keep an open mind and search this notion for yourself.

I am not exactly sure who Prince Really is but I will say this

I believe in Him and Feel like I trust his ways.
