8. Prince, 3121, 530,000. What's Prince doing on a list like this? Anybody can have an album that under-performs, to use a favored industry euphemism. 3121 charted in March 2006. It was Prince's fourth album to reach #1; his first to do since Batman in 1989. "Black Sweat" was the only song from the album to make the Hot 100. It spent one week on the chart at #60.

http://new.music.yahoo.co...-1-albums/

It sold over 1/2 million copies and I don't think it "underperformed" at all for a release with no tour support and very little airplay (that's why "Black Sweat" was only in the singles charts for a week). Prince did do some TV performances to promote it, though..and I think that's what helped it to sell what it did.

Wow, you judge people by the artists they like?

Is it okay if I presume you're a religious recluse who paraded around in women's underwear in the 80s?

Remember I joined this forum for a reason, buddy, I like Prince's music too.

That doesn't mean I have to like everything he does, nor do my other musical tastes have anything to do with...well...anything. I simply posted my opinion on the album here and that was that.

Who's the avatar then? I'm guessing some American pop act?

Most albums don't reach number one on musical content.

I said the exact same thing.

Hype gets you there, it takes content to keep you there.

Very true. Maybe that's why it didn't stay #1 after it's initial boost the first week.

It's her new album cover. She's been looking nice all of this year.

Trouble is I see one photo of some star on a 'Winehouse Day' and that's it, they're forever ingrained in my memory as looking dog rough. I like a girl that looks good without make-up and in the morning.

We're Prince fans. We're not Prince sycophants. That's the difference.

I guess that all the sycophants didn't buy the Black album and relinquished their WB collection when Prince asked them to? No? How shocking.

The man is impossible to like nowadays. At least before he had a sense of humour. Now he's just a crabby old man.

His music, I kinda over listened to it but there's still a few songs I love like Something in the Water, 17 Days and Shhh...

That's kinda narrow minded, don't you think? We all have our off days, or off years in some cases. She only looked that way because she wasn't on the right medication.

I really liked 3121, a lot, and for the record, I hated 'Musicology', but I learned long ago, that you cannot judge an album based on how well it sold. Record sales do not equate to an albums relevance, especially years down the road.

Agreed w/all of that. When it comes to quality of albums tho, I have to admit that I hated Musicology when I first bought it and I dislike it just as much now. 3121 on the other hand is a really solid album. I love that album.

It is truly amazing how strongly people identify with the music they enjoy. You can almost get away with calling someone stupid or ugly before you tell them that the music they like sucks. It's very strange.

Someone refresh me on how P generated 3121 sales.

Musicology was with a ticket purchase, and PE was with a news circular.... right? Didn't he pull a similar stunt with 3121? I can't remember.

ONCE AGAIN PEOPLE, THIS ALBUM DIDN'T SELL WELL, DUE TO LACK OF PROMOTION, NOT BECAUSE OF THE ALBUMS QUALITY!

Lack of radio play is the main problem here, otherwise it wasn't a bad album!
Prince promoted this album to his hollywood and las vegas crowd, filled mostly of Celebs.

Prince did only a few performances to promote (SNL, AMERICAN IDOL, BET AWARDS), but for an album like "3121", with two proper singles, I'd say Gold Status is just fine, I'm sure he made a million off of it.

So polls and census like this don't mean crap.
I could care less!!!

I Loved the entire album!

He did a lot of TV appearances to promote 3121 (Idol, SNL, etc). The newspaper thing was in the UK for Planet Earth.
