There's always the story that the song is about a mentally disabled girl whom he went to school with, however I don't know the source of that so I have no idea how valid that is.
Personally, I've always just understood it to be about the benefits of having a positive/happy-go-lucky attitude towards life - ie. her lunchbox is empty but she imagines that it's full of amazing food, and this positive attitude is contagious towards the people she meets in life. They too are dumbfounded when they "see" it. If you set your mind free, baby, maybe you'll understand [Edited 11/20/08 18:08pm] Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

They're meant to be random.
Initially, you're seeing those things as weird, but by the last chorus, you're seeing them as Cynthia Rose sees them - perfectly reasonable. The whole song is about acceptance of things that initally seem alien to you but you realise, ultimately, are just simply different. And to embrace them is wonderful.

Learning difficulties you will find is a more enabling to the person and less derogatory term. Looking for a new man. Freaks need not apply. Freeeks can tho ;-p

This is only my guess, but I always pictured childish innocence when I listened to this song. Silly playfulness. Imagination, that sort of thing. It may have a deeper meaning, but I prefer this. Reminds me of my niece and nephew when they were young, in the kitchen mixing stuff up "making dinner". Of course making me eat what they had mixed up wasn't much fun for me, but it was worth it to hear them laughing.
Starfish and coffee, playtime and childish innocence.

Susannah's classmate, she told Prince her story... a veteran around here has an article somewhere (langebleu) This is what I've heard in the past as well - Sussanah inspired some great songs from Prince during their time together..... "Grace": "Do you always keep lingerie in your glove box?"
Morris: "None of my women wear gloves"
