Who was Victor to Prince? I watched the sacrafise of Victor video the other day and he says 'My name dam sure ain't Victor' I dont understand it.

I really don't know what Prince means by it...I always looked at it a little like, RCA Victor, and I would think of the old Victrola record players, which was 1948 with the 45rpm.

Thomas Edison invented the record player in 1870...and the first record players began being used around 1900.

For what it is worth, a 78...spun at 77.92 rpm's.

I think the subject of the song was more of a Victor to the social situations that were presented to him than his actual name being Victor.

One of the rumors at the time was that he changed his name to victor and that that was the correct pronunciation of the O+> symbol, as it suppossedly was made up of the letters v i c t o r (kinda feasible...)

In the original song, the name Victor is meant to represent just that; after everything that's happened to him and no matter what people throw at him, he'll always be the victor.

When the name change happened, a lot of the press picked up on the fact that you can roughly breakdown the symbol and spell the word 'victor' with it.

A lot of people (including fans) thought this had some merit, especially combining that with the original song and its potential meaning. Often, during the Act II tour, when Prince asked 'What's My Name?' the fans would shout 'Victor' and he would subsequently say that his name ain't Victor. He probably rolled his eyes and tutted to himself at the same time.

I'm guessing that it was just one of those things that kind of backfired on him a little.
