Lyrics Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead (I'd Dig U) Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead (I'd Dig U) Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead A long time ago, U took six months a walkin' Talkin' on the other side What started as an experiment Turned into a heaven-sent message that saved your ass from dyin' Somebody said "In life there's always peaks and valleys... And if you're lost they won't show U the way" That same somebody said "I'd dig U better dead But I'd much rather see if your God is what U say, say, say" And with the awesome power they struck 1st they offered up the buck Right in the middle, right in the middle they stuck (right in the middle) A toke or 2, what the fuck? (what the fuck?) One minute you're hot Tell the truth and you're not That's the noose that they hang on a goose like U Somebody said "In life there's always peaks and valleys... And if you're lost they won't show U the way" That same somebody said "I'd dig U better dead But I'd much rather see if your God is what U say, say, say" Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead And whatever U do, don't make somebody happy Don't dress 2 freaky and make their daughters stare Then U'll find out how deep the valley truly be If U plan on catchin' the bus, U better have plenty fare Somebody said "In life there's always peaks and valleys... And if you're lost they won't show U the way" That same somebody said "I'd dig U better dead But I'd much rather see if your God is what U say, say, say" Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead Dig, dig, dig U better dead I'd dig, dig U better dead Somebody said "In life there's always peaks and valleys... And if you're lost they won't show U the way" That same somebody said "I'd dig U better dead But I'd much rather see if your God is what U say, say, say" I'd Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead Dig U better dead, I'd dig U better dead Everybody's looking 4 the ladder

Never really took much notice of the lyrics before and to be honest I've not listened to the song much. But looking at it here, it looks to me like it's about the row with WB and the name change situation. RIP

This is my theory on the song:
Prince was having a conversation with someone about his music, when he declared Prince is dead (Come 1958 - 1993), and someone told him they preferred his music under the O'(+> name? Like I said, just a theory... Probably miles out! I am Princes love child!

Hmmmm very intresting, but whats he mean by this verse....

I believe the song means that Prince was confronted with an offer to "sell his soul" of sorts - he refused to buy into it and after that "they" were ticked-off and hated on him.

I've only listened to it once and thought that it was about his changing of his music to suit his religion and his battle with WB. I mean he had to have had a lot of interesting conversations about where his career would go with changing up lyrics, new and less intriguing material and getting paid to do it all. My other theory was he and his bitch at the time had a difference of opinion regarding religion and householf finances

Am I one of the few that really like Chaos and Disorder? Highly underated if you ask me...I guess it's because I only started to listen to Prince music from D&P onwards, until '96 when I picked up the hits + b-sides albums and began looking for everything else. This is what it's like in the dream factory...

Like I said, just a theory... Probably miles out! i always took it to mean the opposite. saying that prince is dead and yet people kept saying they liked "prince" so much. so really what they were saying, in prince's logic, lol. what that they'd dig him better dead (as opposed to the reborn ) and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

And with the awesome power they struck 1st they offered up the buck Right in the middle, right in the middle they stuck (right in the middle) A toke or 2, what the fuck? (what the fuck?) 1st verse is about the release of the "the most beautiful girl in the world" single on his own label. warners granted him the power/opportunity to do it. so for prince it was an experiment in testing the waters and having a look at how things were when you're the one in sole control. as we all know the single took off and became one of his biggest hits and he made a killing from it. that "thinking out of the box" strategy which warner told him would not work, in fact turned out to be a blessing for him and it is probably the most concrete step he took toward his ultimate "emancipation" from the recording industrie. it saved his spirits and his dropping moral in a time when he was frustrated and unhappy with his carreer. the second verse is less clear to me although i've always taken it to be about recoup or royalties etc. the "most beautiful girl" single hit with force and it made a lot of money [presumably]. most of which prince got to pocket since he didn't have too many middle-men or record execs skimming his earnings. plus he got to keep the mastertape to the song. i think "a toke or 2, what the fuck?" is about the contrast between what he made from the single as opposed to what he made from, say, "purple rain" in comparison. either the whole cake, or "a toke or 2", which seemed doubly an unfair treatment given how much you could seemingly earn from a single indy single once it took off and sold in the millions. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I think you got it right, with one letter difference; contract. I think this is about the contract Prince tried to get out of; Awesome power; the uptightness of WB after TMBGITW made it big Buck; first they gave him alotta money (for the contract) Right in the middle; then things sour Toke; ayedunno; something between WB & Prince.

this song along with i rock...has always been banging man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
