Prince versus Cyndi Lauper???? Ok we’ve had Prince versus Michael, Prince versus Madonna…we’ve even had P versus Sir William of Idol, but have we ever had Prince versus she-boppin, justwantinfunin’, drivin'allnightin’ Cyndi Lauper ????
Saw Cyndi in Paris this week, where she did her FAB version of "When you were mine", and it go me a-thinkin’. Cyndi; great pop songs which everyone knows and haven’t dated. Cyndi, still goin’ strong all these years later with a really good new album( Planet Earth, are you listenin'’???). Cyndi, looking great without too much make-up or airbrushin’ ( do I REALLY need to make a comment here???!!!). Cyndi, has had her share of controversy ( we bop, he bop...) but has come out the other side. Cyndi, great voice live and on record. Cyndi, no crap contract-fillin' discs. Cyndi, no crap actin'. Cyndi....great spelling of a great name. So, I ask orgers....could Cyndi be better than Prince?????!!!!! [Edited 10/24/08 0:04am]

If you put Cyndi's classic material up against Prince's it's no contest - Prince wins easily.
But I do think she made Prince look foolsh at the 1985 Grammys where Prince went up to the podium to accept his awards with Big Chic by his side so she went up there with Hulk Hogan at her side. Pretty funny. I would love to have seen the look on Prince's and Big Chic's face. the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

Cyndi's awesome. She's one of my favorites.
But I think you got a few of your facts wrong, like: No crap actin': May I point you toward Vibes? No crap contract-filling discs: Um, there have been a few. The two have a lot more similarities as well. I think both Cyndi and Prince look great, but both are well aided by makeup and retouching. Let's not kid ourselves. And both have great voices in concert and on record, and both put on great concerts. Both have remade one of their signature '80s hits to disastrous effect ("Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "1999"). Both were cool in the '80s and both are still going strong.

Hmm, interesting...didn't know about "Vibes".

I LOVE Cyndi Lauper - she's an original, like Prince. I don't know much about her acting to be honest, just love her music 'Time after Time' is divine!! Girls just wanna have Fun, a classic! Love her whole aura, sense of style, and she's different. I love 'different'.
I'd love to see her live, lucky you eireboy - did she look / sound great? I'll need to check out her new album too, I'm SO behind the times .....

I agree with your first line but come on...Cyndi looked a right stupid with Hulk Hogan up there, I felt sorry for her that she needed to do that. We all know that Prince started the whole entourage and beefy bodyguard trend. After him, everyone started doing that which is why its so utterly boring today. Prince's career far outlasted Cyndi's and although its nice to see her returning with a new album..Prince, Madonna, MJ and The Boss left her in the dust a long time ago. Hell I even accuse Madonna of hijacking Cyndi's look and doing it better!!

Desiree, Cyndi was doing that as a spoof of Prince...as a total joke. She wasn't serious at all. She was showing how ridiculous Prince was being. In fact, I remember her saying later that she had no idea why Prince would walk up to accept an award with a bodyguard. I think some of you are taking this a bit too seriously. Cyndi is great. Having recently seen her live I can confirm that she is THE most underrated performer out there. Talent wise she leaves the Madonnas and Janet WACKsons of this world in the dust. Sadly, most people just remember her as that crazy girl with orange hair from the '80s, but she's A LOT more than that. Is she on Prince's level? No, but who the hell is? I'm certainly not gonna diss her for that.
One big difference between them is that, unike Prince, Cyndi is not free. Prince bitches about record companies, but he has always been able to make his music on his own terms, and get most of it released. Cyndi hasn't been able to do that now for years. After her Sisters of Avalon CD flopped in 1996, her record company decided they would only finance novelty records for her. That meant a Christmas album, a covers album, an acoustic album of re-recordings and now a dance album. She had to go independent to record 2001's Shine and was only able to release it in Japan. It's quite sad because, unbeknownst to the masses, she is actually a really great songwriter, as well as a charismatic performer. Here's an excerpt from an interview where she talks about her struggles with record companies..... “The covers album was a side project,” she says. “But then I wanted to do my own record, and the record company were like, ‘Oh, we want you to do another cover record.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t f***ing think so.’ Then I bumped into Jeff Beck and we had this idea to do a blues album together, but they said no. Then they wanted me to do an Eighties record and I was like, ‘Hey, these songs weren’t even as big as mine in the Eighties. What the hell am I doing covering them? I might as well cover myself.’ What can I tell you? They didn’t have faith in me as an artist. They were just a load of suits, and it was the suits who wrecked the f***ing music business.” [Edited 10/23/08 13:44pm] “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Cyndi rag doll Lauper is not even better than Madonna or Janet Jackson so she's definitely not better than Prince.
Most of the songs from her first 2 relevant albums in the 80's were not written by her soley or at all. Her most popular and arguably her best songs are Time After Time, True Clours and Girls Just Want to Have Fun. She didn't write True Colors and Girls Just Want to Have Fun and co wrote Time After Time. Although, I seriously doubt she wrote the actual music to Time After Time. She probably wrote some of the lyrics and the other guy wrote the music. Most of the songs on her first 4 albums were tri written or written by someone else. At least Madonna co wrote some of her best songs and Janet Jackson tri wrote the majority of her songs. Relatively she's not a great vocalist so no, overall she's not better than Prince, Madonna or Janet Jackson. [Edited 10/23/08 17:51pm]

You're so right.
Cindy has released cds a lot better than Sign o the times, PR, Around the world in a Day, 1999, Dirty Mind, TRC, The Gold Experience, The Black Album. Cindy is a better stage performer as well. Her shows are always a lot better than Prince's. She is a better guitar player, drummer, bass player, keyboard player as well than Prince will ever be. Have you attended one of her aftershows as well ? because let me tell you, she makes Prince look ridiculous in a small club. Man, she can lead a band and jam on the bass forever. She is just better than Prince. Full stop. [Edited 10/24/08 0:44am]
