Tricky was recorded by Jamie Starr and Morris Day, They were throwing jabs at George Clinton. They were dissing George Clinton on that cut. It wasn't a serious diss like how these rappers do now. Jamie was just talking some shit and have some fun on the track. Just think, we all know who Jamie Starr is. Jamie Starr and The Time was inspired alot by George Clinton, his music, and The P-funk era of music.

From what I've heard it had a lot to do with the old guard vs. the new...U know, the kill your heroes premise...The whole "We ain't gonna put no more instruments on this" points to JB's/P-Funk's big band style...In addition, the first part of the song seems to be going at George Clinton as well...But by the end, JB gets the brunt of it... Also, Prince's embarrassing showing at James Brown/BB King's charity gig may have had a lot to do with some of the stinging disses...Remember, JB was/is Prince's hero...So, imagine Prince getting his ass kicked onstage by Michael J. in front of his hero, who later virtually co-signed Mike as his worthy successor (it wasn't until a couple of years later that James said Prince actually "understood" his groove and spirit)... But there are a few lines that are telling: "You... you old, Michelin Man, fat, black...Let me... wait. You, you, you're just old. That's all I know, you're just old and you're fat....You know it, you're just fat and old." [Edited 10/19/08 9:18am]

I have always heard that this track was about Bootsy Collins and George Clinton, in a "fun" way. Not James Brown! The descriptions don't even sound like JB.

Complexion wise George and Bootsy could never be classified as "black"...JB was much darker in the context of the joke...Plus George had not yet gained a large amount weight (at that time...this is the Atomic Dog era) to be called "fat"... I think the first few lines are the ones going at GC and Bootsy....(the gold tooth diss is Bootsy all day...and the instruments quip is going out to the PFunk style of having 100 dudes onstage and on record...The irony is GC and the gang adapted quite well to the stripped down '80s)....But after that Prince seems to be digging hard on JB.... U know what tossing the salad means right? Chris Rock will tell you if you don't.
No way in hell this would be about James Brown. Not in a million years.
