PRINCE CHART RUNS

Does anyone knows Prince's complete chart runs in the Billboard Hot 100 (or at least their Top 40 portion)?

Hes had 5 number one hits, When Doves Cry, ;Lets Go Crazy, Kiss, Batdance and Cream. But has not had anything higher than number 3 since 1994, When the Most Beautiful girl got there.
Other piece of Trivia, Princes first number one hit in Britain was the Most Beautiful girl in 1994, it was his 37th release there since I wanna be your lover. His previous best was a double A side of 1999/ Little Red Corvette, which peaked at #2 in January 1985 (In the midst of Purple Rain Mania

Soft and wet was his first Pop Hit reaching 92 in June 1978 and #12 R and B, I wanna be your lover was #11 Pop in January 1980 and his R and B number one.
Little Red Corvette reached #6 in May 1983, making it his first Top 10 Pop hit and When Doves Cry also reached #1 in June 1984 and stayed there five weeks, going double platinum and being the biggest hit of 1984 and his biggest ever hit to date. It only got #4 in the UK
The Purple Rain album sold 13 million copies in the USA (and 7 million more worldwide, including 1.5 million in the UK) and was number one for 26 weeks, in the midst of the Movie and Tour. Only ATWIAD, Batdance and incredibly 3121 have been #1 albums in the USA. His second biggest Album Diamonds and Pearls reputedley sold 4 million in the USA and 3 million more worldwide only peaked at #3. 3121 however sold less than a million worldwide, yet still was #1, mainly due to one good week and quickly retreating sales, as well as the moribund state of CD sales in the Ipod concious millenium.

Hope this helps a bit, try the Billboard book of Pop hits (Joel Whithorn???) or anything by Paul Gambaccini for British chart statistics

Just out of interest:
I Wanna Be Your Lover got to number 3 here in New Zealand in Feb 1980. As far as i know this is his 1st top 10 hit in the national charts of any country in the world.

And not counting any songs he's done for other artists, he himself has had over 50 different top 20 singles off his albums in national charts around the world (not talking black charts/alternative charts/rnb charts/contempory charts etc, i mean actual national top 20's). Pretty impressive really (although only 4 have come from this century...).

I doubt there's many other artist/groups who have notched up 50+ national top 20 singles (and more than 20 top 10 albums) in there lifetimes...

I am not interested in peak positions but in actual week to week chart runs. I got those for the UK (I could post them if anyone is interested) I was wondering if anyone has them for the US hot 100 as well

Youre right the same year, our number ones were songs like Tears by Cathy and Crocodiles and Montego Bay by John Stevens. (Remember Ready to Roll)

Alphabet Street was his only Kiwi Number one. Kiss and Doves only got to 2 and my favourite bubbled out at 15.

Your favorite: would that be Peach?
Don't forget TMBGITW and Batdance, those two were also number 1's here.

It's kinda sad that he hasn't had a top 20 single here for over 14 years since Most Beautiful Girl was number 1.

I heard a long time ago that Prince has the record for most #2 songs .

Can anyone conferm that rumor ?

No way... that would be Elvis Presley in the UK with 18 #2 hits and I am not sure about the US but definitely not Prince

No the record there goes to Creedence Clearwater Revival who in 1969 to 1971 had 6 consecutive number 2 singles, being kept out of the top by rubbish like Sugar Sugar, Love Grows where my Rosemary goes and in the year 2525. The songs were Proud Mary, Willie and the Poor Boys, Green River, Fortunate Son to name a few. Creedence never number oned in Billboard, although aparently Bad Moon Rising did it for one week in Cashbox

You are right. CCR had more #2s than either Elvis or Madonna. They had 7. They got to #2 with Green River, Proud Mary, Bad Moon Rising, Long As I Can See The Light, Looking Out My Back Door, Travelling Band and Who'll Stop The Rain. Willie And The Poor Boys never charted on the pop charts whereas Fortunate Son made it only to #14

Its uncanny, how anyone can have so many number 2 hits and never reach that elusive number one song. Like I said I wasn't sure how many (6 or 7) and what songs of CCR #2ed, they were a bit before my time, but I read as some trivia that CCR were famous for their number of number 2 hits.
Stranger still artists like Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Culture Club and the Rolling Stones all had their first number one, before a song of theirs peaked at number 2.
The most famous act to have a number 2 hit before a string of number ones were the Beatles, whose second release (Please please me) stalled at #2 in Britain in March 1963 (The first single, Love Me do stalled at #18) and it wasn't until From me to you, the third song peaked at #1 in June 1963 they hit number one for the first at least 16 occasions depending on whose charts you look at. As you all know they didn't explode on the American scene until January 1964, with the current Hit I want to Hold your hand, which reputedley sold 15 million copies worldwide and was translated into several languages. In April 1964 the Beatles had become so popular that they held the Top 5 placings on the Billboard pop chart.
