If Purple Rain (the movie) never happened, how big a star would P be now?

It launched him world wide, was the 3rd biggest grossing movie of '84 (behind Ghostbusters and Gremlins), but without it, would Prince have acheived the fame he did? here in the UK, he was known but wasn't a massive act. Purple rain got him noticed outside the USA, How would the album have faired standing on its own do you think? outsold 1999?

Would we have the Prince we have today? or would he have been finished years ago?

Wrong forum edit! lol

I have always wondered if Purple Rain the movie was a hit overseas.
I think it is impossible to tell that, at least by today's standards.

Purple Rain is a very good album, so I think it would have done well if the movie was never done.

That album was gonna give him a bigger audience even without the film. nod

It's just that good. Prince was a star from day one any damn way.

Most of the cool people that I spoke to (black/white/male female) dug P in 81/82. His crossover was just starting so he was slowly becoming a household name.

If "P.R" the LP came out (w/out the movie) I think he still would have crossed over big.

I think he would have been a star. He may not have been as big as he is, but he definitely would have been a star. Hell, he was a pretty big star pre-Purple Rain thanks to 1999.

We see how far Prince has come through the years of making music.

The movie, "Purple Rain," was definitely a time where music listeners weren't the only people exposed to this musical, it definitely made Prince a movie star as well as a musician.

What is is what is. Had "Purple Rain," not have been written, another movie may have been.

In the UK, 1999 was already a big hit I think? When Doves Cry was huge even before the movie was released wasn't it? And, I think Purple Rain the song, would have been massive regardless of the film. But, obviously the movie helped a lot too!

It's funny actually, I was talking to a friend over the weekend, and we were talking about liking Prince 'back in the day' but neither of us remembered other people liking him, we both agreed it was like a sort of 'underground' / cult thing to like Prince, you didn't really talk about it! Everyone else was going on about MJ etc. And that was even when Purple Rain was released .... strange!
